Homogeneity or Heterogeneity in Mobilization Dynamics? Bridging and Homophily within United States Strike Waves in the Late Nineteenth Century
Lind B. E.
Scholarship on social movements has yet to systematically analyze the topic of attributional
similarities and differences among participants as a dynamic process. This study evaluates existent
social movement literature on this subject and builds upon it using theories within the field of
social networks and segregation. The study at hand synthesizes theories of bridging and
homophily with undercurrents from social movement literature to understand the prevalence and
dynamics of homogeneity, or heterogeneity, among mobilized populations. To analyze these
theories, the study focuses upon United States strike waves during the late nineteenth century using
the population of strikes from a national longitudinal dataset, spanning the years 1881 to 1894.
Through bivariate analyses and permutation models, the study finds evidence that participant
diversity accompanies strike wave growth, but on the whole strike waves tend to show greater
homophily than expected by chance. Though most waves diversify over time, for all attributes
studied other than industrial classification, the rate at which strike waves diversify generally does
not differ from chance expectations. Beyond their implications for strikes, social movements, and
collective action, these findings contribute to the broader discussion of group formation and
integration.
