‘Working with AI Solves a Wide Range of Engineering Problems
Artificial intelligence is a working tool based on a balanced combination of algorithms and engineering. Experts and doctoral students from the HSE Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics explain how AI technologies can improve an application, device, or system, and what engineering tasks are solved in the process.

‘I Would Like My Research to Help Make the World a Calmer and Better Place
Whatever task Saraa Ali, Junior Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis (LAMBDA) of the AI and Digital Science Institute (HSE Faculty of Computer Science), is working on, she thinks about how it can benefit people. She told the Young Scientists of HSE University project about her large family, diagnosing three-phase motors, and her dream of building a children’s home in her native country.

‘The Peak of Stupidity and ‘The Valley of Despair: HSE Economists Propose an Explanation for the Dunning–Kruger Effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect, which describes a sharp surge in self-confidence among beginners followed by an equally rapid decline as they gain experience, can be explained by the nature of the learning process and the acquisition of new knowledge. This conclusion was reached by Andrey Vorchik of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences together with independent researcher Murat Mamyshev. They developed a mathematical model of learning and demonstrated how subjective confidence is formed and changes as knowledge accumulates, as well as how teachers can reduce the ‘valley of despair’ experienced by learners.

Medical electrod developing based on slow-wave system in case of prostate gland disease

P. 702–707.
Yelizarov (Elizarov) A. A., Shaymardanov R.

This article considers prostate gland disease method of treatment. The electrodynamic analysis of an electrode based on slow-wave system like the “ribbed coaxial line” is carried out. Received analytical ratios allowing to make calculation of dispersive characteristics and wave resistance. Parameters of such electrode depend on the geometrical sizes of forming conductors and the dielectric filling corresponding to prostate gland biotissues. Application prospects of such structure are defined in creation microwave devices for treatment intracavitary organs diseases and comparison with an electrode based on spiral slow-wave system.

Yelizarov (Elizarov) A. A., Pchelnikov Y., Shaymardanov R., Technical Physics 2017 Vol. 62 No. 8 P. 1236–1241
The wave dispersion in the slow-wave structure such as a coaxial ribbed line has been analyzed. For the case of the excitation of an axially symmetric wave in this structure, the generalized dispersion equation has been obtained using the method of sewing the conductivities. The particular cases of a solution of the dispersion equation have ...

One of the perspective directions of slow wave systems usage is possibility of their implementation in biology and medicine as antennas and radiators for radio-frequency and microwave physical therapy, a radiothermy and a tomography, sensitive elements for medical diagnostics, devices for sterilization and heat treatment. Advantages of slow wave systems usage in biology and medicine ...

Electro-Dynamic Analysis of the Slow-Wave Structure Formed by the Ribbed Coaxial Line
Yelizarov Andrey, Pchelnikov Y., Shaymardanov R., , in: Proceedings of the 15th IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IVEC-2014).: Monterey: Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2014. P. 297–298.
In this paper, we analyze the coaxial line, which one or both electrodes have radial grooves, forming ribs. Such "ribbed" coaxial line represents a slow-wave structure (SWS), which characteristics depend on radiuses of the electrodes and the grooves' depth. Analysis of such complex SWS is significantly simplified in the case of relatively low frequencies, the ...
