At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Physiological mechanisms and adaptation in high-performance shooting: a biomarker review

Frontiers in Human Neuroscience. 2026. Vol. 20. Article 1901170.
Баева Л. В., Grigorev N., Казанцев В. Б., Гордлеева С. Ю.

Precision shooting depends on the coordinated integration of multiple psychophysiological systems. This review summarizes the current literature on quantifiable biomarkers associated with high performance in shooting sports, examining neural, cardiac, oculomotor, muscular, postural, and respiratory activity. Special attention is given to individual variability in postural control and sensorimotor integration as key factors distinguishing expert from novice shooters. Electroencephalographic studies show that experienced shooters exhibit characteristic patterns of cortical activity, including left-hemisphere alpha synchronization reflecting reduced verbal-analytic processing, specific theta rhythm dynamics associated with focused concentration, and increased sensorimotor rhythm power associated with efficient movement preparation. Cardiac activity studies demonstrate that successful shooting is associated with a slower heart rate, a specific shot execution time within the cardiac cycle, and increased heart rate variability reflecting parasympathetic dominance. Oculomotor activity determines the duration of a steady gaze, a critical factor in accuracy, especially under competitive pressure. Electromyographic analysis shows that experts maintain stable, low-level muscle activation compared to novices, who exhibit a progressive increase in tension. Postural balance plays a significant role in weapon stability. Breathing regulation facilitates synchronization with exhalation and an optimal state of the autonomic nervous system. Despite the significant contribution of each parameter to performance, most studies examine individual parameters in isolation. Future research should focus on a multimodal approach that considers intersystem interactions and integrates relevant analytical tools, such as neural networks and explainable artificial intelligence. Training approaches using biofeedback have been shown to accelerate skill acquisition. Therefore, the development of personalized real-time feedback systems that transform raw physiological data into practical recommendations will be essential for optimizing training effectiveness and achieving maximum shooting performance.

Elena A. Andresyuk, Natalya O. Porozova, Londaridze G. et al., Frontiers in Oncology 2026 Vol. 16 Article 1875861
Inhibition of the PD-1/PD-L1 axis has become a clinical standard across multiple malignancies, yet durable benefit remains restricted to selected settings, and many biologically rational combinations fail to maintain clinical benefit in late-phase evaluation. This structured, registry-derived narrative review, supported by expert-guided interpretation, was designed to identify the most clinically meaningful development directions among strategies ...

Physiological and molecular mechanisms of tolerance to hypoxia and oxygen deficiency resistance markers
Silina M., Dzhalilova D., Fokichev N. et al., Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences 2025 Vol. 12 Article 1674608
Humans and laboratory animals differ in their resistance to hypoxia, which affects the severity of inflammatory diseases and the rate of tumor progression. Therefore, it is necessary to search for methods for assessing the initial tolerance to oxygen deficiency and the risks of developing acute mountain sickness without direct hypoxia exposure on the organism. The ...

Motor imagery training under the control of a brain-computer interface (BCI) facilitates motor recovery after stroke. The efficacy of BCI based on electroencephalography (EEG-BCI) has been confirmed by several meta-analyses, but a more convenient and noise-resistant method of near-infrared spectroscopy in the BCI circuit (NIRS-BCI) has been practically unexamined; comparisons of the two types of ...

The advancement of novel technologies for the rehabilitation of post-stroke patients represents a significant challenge for a range of interdisciplinary fields. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is an optical neuroimaging technique based on recording local hemodynamic changes at the cerebral cortex level. The technology is typically employed in post-stroke patients for diagnostic purposes, including the assessment of ...

Hemodynamic Response Asymmetry During Motor Imagery in Stroke Patients: A Novel NIRS-BCI Assessment Approach
Isaev M., Pavel Bobrov, Olesya Mokienko et al., Sensors 2025 Vol. 25 No. 16 Article 5040
Understanding patterns of interhemispheric asymmetry is crucial for monitoring neuroplastic changes during post-stroke motor rehabilitation. However, conventional laterality indices often pose computational challenges when applied to functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) data due to the bidirectional hemodynamic responses. In this study, we analyze fNIRS recordings from 15 post-stroke patients undergoing motor imagery brain-computer interface training across ...

Higher integration of the whole-brain resting state theta band network is associated with spatial working memory
Anna Pavlova, Adamovich T., Malykh S., Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 2026 Vol. 20 Article 1748183
The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between resting-state EEG functional connectivity and spatial working memory (SWM) in adolescents, using a graph-theoretical approach. Sixty-three healthy adolescents (38 females; M = 16.8, SD = 0.47) participated in the study. Resting-state EEG was recorded by a wireless dry-sensor 32-channel headset (Cognionics Quick-32r) configured in a standard 10–20 montage. ...

Identification of a serum proteomic biomarker panel using diagnosis specific ensemble learning and symptoms for early pancreatic cancer detection
Ney A., Nené N., Sedlak E. et al., PLoS Computational Biology 2024 Vol. 20 No. 8 Article e1012408
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has one of the lowest 5-year survival rates among cancers, primarily due to its complex biology and late-stage diagnosis. Early symptoms often mimic benign gastrointestinal conditions, complicating timely detection. The standard biomarker, carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19–9, is not reliable due to its suboptimal performance and elevation in benign conditions, highlighting the ...

Background/Objectives: The physiological basis underlying symptomatic versus asymptomatic premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) remains poorly understood. However, symptomatic PVCs can significantly impair quality of life. In patients without structural heart disease, symptom intensity is crucial for guiding management strategies and determining the need for medical or surgical intervention. In this study, we aimed, for the first ...
