The 'Second Shift' Is Not Why Women Avoid News
Women are more likely than men to avoid political and economic news, but the reasons for this behaviour are linked less to structural inequality or family-related stress than to personal attitudes and the emotional perception of news content. This conclusion was reached by HSE researchers after analysing data from a large-scale survey of more than 10,000 residents across 61 regions of Russia. The study findings have been published in Woman in Russian Society.

The ancestral architecture of the immune system in simplest animals
Daria Y. Romanova, Moroz L., Frontiers in Immunology 2025 Vol. 15 Article 1529836
~520 million years ago, the long biogeochemical history of our planet Earth resulted in a biodiversity burst. The rapid diversification of animals known as the Cambrian explosion (1); transformed planetary ecosystems with novel habitats and food chains (2, 3). However, this emergence of Paleozoic biodiversity (4) is still mysterious due to limited information about basal metazoans ...

Сохранить человеческое: идеал гуманизма и реальность человека
Leontiev D., Философские науки 2025 Т. 68 № 1 С. 79–91
The paper examines the issue of the humane in the human being in the context of the dialectic between ideals and reality. Reflecting on discussions about human essence leads to the conclusion of its inherent indeterminacy and the multiplicity of potential capabilities within each individual, which develop throughout life. The distinction between ideal and reality ...

Beliefs about a Brighter Future for All Humanity as an Evolutionary Adaptation to Pathogen Prevalence
Haas B., Lou X., Yeung V. W. et al., Personality and Individual Differences 2025 Vol. 247 Article 113398
An important question in cogntive and evolutionary psychology is how the human mind anticipates the future and copes with stress and risk of disease. The parasite-stress model suggests that many patterns of human behavior and thought are adaptations to varying levels of exposure to parasites and pathogens. A growing body of health psychology research shows ...

Conclusions: Exploring Big History Periodizations Across Cosmic and Biosocial Dimensions with Ideas for Further Research
LePoire D., Leonid Grinin, Korotayev A., , in: Navigating Complexity in Big History. Exploring Periodization Across Cosmic and Biosocial Dimensions.: Springer, 2025. P. 495–525.
This volume, “Navigating Complexity in Big History—Exploring Periodization Across Cosmic and Biosocial Dimensions” explores the aspects and proposals for periodization of Big History. This includes considering cross-cutting aspects of measuring complexity (e.g., energy, information, or a combination), considering different mechanisms of natural selection, developing a set of criteria to base the evaluation of frameworks, and ...

Navigating Complexity in Big History—Exploring Periodization Across Cosmic and Biosocial Dimensions: An Introduction
LePoire D., Leonid Grinin, Andrey Korotayev, , in: Navigating Complexity in Big History. Exploring Periodization Across Cosmic and Biosocial Dimensions.: Springer, 2025. P. 1–27.
Not so many would argue with identifying complexity as a central concept in Big History and universal evolutionism. It is partly because, perhaps, today, many of us are convinced that not only our world but Universe itself is in a state of major change, and the awareness that we are living in a period of ...

Navigating Complexity in Big History. Exploring Periodization Across Cosmic and Biosocial Dimensions
David J. L., L. Grinin, Korotayev A., Springer, 2025.
In the editors’ introduction (Chapter 1), the effort to periodize is placed within the historical context along with considerations from complexity science. Subsequent chapters explore various aspects of periodization and complexity by (a) identifying symmetrical cosmic and biosocial trends, (b) testing rigor and criteria for evaluating periodization, (c) attempting to integrate different approaches through multiple ...

Complexity Growth Patterns in the Stelliferous Era of Big History. Preliminary Observations
Korotayev A., LePoire D., Journal of Big History 2025 Vol. 8 No. 1 P. 1–12
A previous study compared the symmetries of the cooling after the Big Bang and the development of life, humans, and civilization on Earth. A simple model of the relative rates of change depicts two cones joined at their bases representing the Big Bang expansion and the acceleration of complexity development on earth through life evolution, ...

Evolutionary history of the grass gynoecium
Sokoloff D., Fomichev C., Rudall P. et al., Journal of Experimental Botany 2022 Vol. 73 No. 14 P. 4637–4661
The grass family (Poaceae) includes cereal crops that provide a key food source for the human population. The food industry uses the starch deposited in the cereal grain, which develops directly from the gynoecium. Morphological interpretation of the grass gynoecium remains controversial. We re-examine earlier hypotheses and studies of morphology and development in the context ...

Intermittent Development of Central Place Systems: The Dynamics of Unification and Breakup
R. V. Dmitriev, Gorokhov S. A., Agafoshin M. M., R-Economy 2023 Vol. 9 No. 2 P. 140–154
Relevance. The development of central place theory has been hindered by its static nature, as it fails to capture transitions between equilibrium states in central place systems. This long-standing problem remains unsolved since the theory's inception 90 years ago. This article presents a solution by examining the cases of system unification and system breakup, where ...
