This paper discusses a variant of perception the myth of Iphigenia, the Taurian Artemis and Orestes in urban religious cults of the Hellenistic and Roman time. There was a xoanon of goddess in Athens. Its origin went back to the myth. In 480 BC, Persians took the xoanon away from Athens. Circa 300 BC Seleucus I Nicator gave the statue to the civil community of Laodicea by the Sea. He founded this city as an important regional center of his state. Laodiceans worshiped Artemis until the Christianization. Some specific features of her cult, such as human sacrifices or young girls as priestess could be related to the Tauric Goddess’s mythology.
