This article examines Yuri Buida’s most recent novels through the lens of the recurring motif of duality. It reveals that in the novels “The Gift of Speech” (2023) and “The Lion and Cinnamon” (2025), several characters bear two different names, echoing the tradition of double naming of emperors in the Byzantine and Russian traditions. Dual naming was used as a way to distinguish “these” from “theirs” (family members knew both their true and public names, while “theirs” knew only their external names) and as protection from the evil eye and illness. This latter motif is clearly emphasized in “The Lion and Cinnamon”.
