‘I Would Like My Research to Help Make the World a Calmer and Better Place
Whatever task Saraa Ali, Junior Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis (LAMBDA) of the AI and Digital Science Institute (HSE Faculty of Computer Science), is working on, she thinks about how it can benefit people. She told the Young Scientists of HSE University project about her large family, diagnosing three-phase motors, and her dream of building a children’s home in her native country.

‘The Peak of Stupidity and ‘The Valley of Despair: HSE Economists Propose an Explanation for the Dunning–Kruger Effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect, which describes a sharp surge in self-confidence among beginners followed by an equally rapid decline as they gain experience, can be explained by the nature of the learning process and the acquisition of new knowledge. This conclusion was reached by Andrey Vorchik of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences together with independent researcher Murat Mamyshev. They developed a mathematical model of learning and demonstrated how subjective confidence is formed and changes as knowledge accumulates, as well as how teachers can reduce the ‘valley of despair’ experienced by learners.

‘I Like Self-Fulfilling Prophecies
Andrey Vorchik studies happiness, delivers popular science lectures, and believes that science should address social issues as well. In an interview for the Young Scientists of HSE University project, he spoke about how emotions influence decision-making, the Bermuda Triangle formed by the bathroom, refrigerator, and bed, and the ideal formula for education.

Automated Detection of Different Publication Patterns of Online Deliberation as a Research Domain

P. 146–163.
Volkovskii D., Olga Filatova, Bolgov R.

The paper intends to contribute to a better comprehension of literature on online deliberation and demonstrate possibilities of using software provided for automated processing of information arrays downloaded from bibliographic databases for scientometric analysis of a complex interdisciplinary research domain. We present a descriptive analysis of sources and authors in order to detect what meanings (networked) deliberation may have, comprising a short review on basic directions of research domain. Also, the conceptual structure of research field is analyzed using bibliometric analysis which allows to generate a map of main and highly relevant themes studied. As a result, we suggest future research directions for deliberative studies. In total, 1946 publications from databases of Scopus during the period 1968–2022 are analyzed. The outcomes indicate on an opportunity of effective using the functionality of Biblioshiny and VOSviewer to investigate trends in science. Qualitative interpretation of results assists to propose a few valuable directions for deliberative studies which should be developed further. The first prominent observance is a lack of studies exploring e-deliberation and its quality in the conditions of exogenous shocks (war, pandemics, natural disasters). One more less discovered venue correlates with studying citizens’ motivations and purposes to participate in political conversation via online platforms. The third research idea is devoted to understanding what online deliberation represents and what effects it may have on citizenry and government.
