This article is devoted to the study of the history of volunteerism in the Soviet Union using the city of Nizhny Tagil as an example. The author substantiates the thesis that the social practices of Soviet citizens were a manifestation of charity. The work shows a wide range of forms of charity among the population of Nizhny Tagil and their evolution from the practices of social participation popular in Tsarist Russia to the establishment of volunteerism as the main method of social assistance to those in need. The period of the greatest charitable activity was the period of the Great Patriotic War, characterized by the tension of all forces of the Soviet people. It is noted that a significant role in the development of charitable principles was played by state power, which contributed to the dissemination of ideas of solidarity and selfless activity for the benefit of society. The high degree of involvement of Soviet citizens in the volunteer charity movement is emphasized. The article concludes that the state control of life in all spheres of Soviet society and the refusal of the authorities to recognize charity as a socially useful practice did not abolish it as a phenomenon
