HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

О влиянии комфортной коммуникативной среды вуза на повышение успеваемости студентов в иноязычной подготовке

ЦИТИСЭ. 2024. № 4. С. 697–703.
Zhilina L. V.

It is widely recognized that communication is impossible without language proficiency, yet linguistic knowledge alone does not guarantee successful communication. Numerous scholars investigating the language competence of international relations specialists concur that, in addition to mastering specialized professional terminology in a foreign language, a professional must possess high-level skills in organizing and conducting negotiations, engaging in casual conversation, understanding the linguocultural specificities of the target language country, and, building upon this foundation, corresponding with relevant parties, as well as drafting analytical reports, summaries, and presentations for superiors.

This is facilitated by the unique intercultural environment fostered within the linguistic programs at the Higher School of Economics, where classical traditions of foreign language education are organically integrated with innovative pedagogical practices. In other words, the essence of a university’s communicative educational environment lies in sustaining interpersonal interaction among participants, humanizing pedagogical influence on the learner, and creating conditions of comfort and psychological safety. In such an environment, the learner is naturally compelled to engage actively, to employ their abilities and potential throughout the learning process, rather than remain a passive observer.

A comfortable educational environment is fundamentally grounded in the principles of cooperation and encompasses positive interactions at the teacher-student level. It is built on mutual support and an atmosphere of trust, where interpersonal relations within the academic community play a significant role. When establishing such an environment in higher education, it is essential to prioritize students’ interests, take into account individual abilities and inclinations, and create situations of success—a powerful incentive for the desire to learn, and to learn effectively.
