Dragotin Godina “Exchange Cooperatives Will Free Us from the Slavery of Money and Capital” (1925)
Godina was a Slovene participant in the October Revolution from Trieste who, upon his return home, become profoundly involved with Amadeo Bordiga's "ultra-left," rejecting parliamentary forms of struggle and the Bolshevik idea of land redistribution as an alternative to socialist collective agriculture in underdeveloped countries. Around 1923-24, he broke with communism completely, although he would spend the remainder of his life searching for alternatives to capitalism. His 1925 pamphlet is an abridged version of some of the proposals from his 1924 book Idealizem. In it, he proposes a moneyless, cooperative-based economy as an alternative to both capitalism and NEP-era Russian "socialism" (which he, like Lenin, appears to have considered "state capitalist"). Despite some apparently brief period of fascist sympathy, he later remained on the left, living in Vienna in exile after 1926, and, after 1948 in Trieste, he headed the Titoist Independent Socialist Union.
