‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

Политическое в пространстве турбулентного мира

Полис. Политические исследования. 2023. № 1. С. 7–10.
Гаман-Голутвина О.В., Сморгунов Л. В.

The object of consideration in the article is the sources of global turbulence and the understanding of this topic within the framework of modern political science. Among the sources of turbulence are the natural environment and its pulsations, which can destabilize social systems; anthropogenic impact on nature, climate and large ecosystems; unstable demography and powerful migration flows; technological revolution, radically consolidating communication and information space.; the gigantic expansion of the possibilities of individuals to influence society, which increases the growth of the chaoticization of social space. The sources of turbulence should also include sources that are inherently political in nature and genesis – contradictions and conflicts within the global political system, including the struggle of the United States to preserve its global hegemony; the conditional “revisionism” of those who feel violated within the existing system (China); attempts to restore the former imperial greatness of the Ottoman Porte, the British the Empire, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, etc.

The peculiarity of the current situation is that many of the sources mentioned have resonated, creating a situation of “perfect storm”, fraught with political and even physical resolution of the existing system. The understanding of this situation has become the subject of the authors' consideration.

Vanishing Vanguard: Decline of Leadership in Revolutionary Mass Mobilization since the 19th Century
Ustyuzhanin V., Zinkina J. V., Korotayev A., / Series "SocArXiv". 2026.
“Leaderlessness” is widely held to be a defining feature of contemporary mass mobilization, yet the claim rests on a handful of recent cases. We offer the first systematic cross-national analysis of this phenomenon from 1791 to 2019. We show that the absence of leadership is real but older and more modest than claimed: the share ...

A statistically stationary flow regime corresponding to a Reynolds number of Re ≈ 1000 has been achieved, the flow structure has been analyzed, and the energy spectrum of velocities has been calculated. The results ...

Cross-influence of two societies in deterministic evolutionary game
Shchur L., Antonov D., Burovski E., International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos in Applied Sciences and Engineering 2026 Vol. 36 No. 10 Article 2650132
We present a simple model that simulates the possible influence of one society on another. Specifically, two societies evolve deterministically according to the well-known Nowak-May spatial game with the addition of mutual influence through connections that reflect the current states of the societies. This may be related to the influence of a global information resource ...

Long-range spatial velocity statistics in a rotating coherent turbulent vortex
Leon L. Ogorodnikov, Sergey S. Vergeles, Physical Review Fluids 2025 Vol. 10 No. 12 Article 124702
We study the spatial dependence of pair correlation functions of velocity field com ponents in a rotating turbulent fluid on a background of a coherent geostrophic vortex. The statistics of the turbulent pulsations are determined by their dynamics, which is the dynamics of inertial waves affected by the differential rotation in the vortex and a ...
