Subject. Performance of regional system of universities for sustainable development of the region
Objective. Identification of areas for optimizing the performance of regional system of universities for sustainable development of regions.
Methodology. The author's methodology for assessing the functioning of regional system of universities based on the index method is used. Correlation analysis and mathematical modeling Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) are applied. The object of the study is the regions of the Ural Economic Region (UER).
Results. The functioning of regional system of universities in the UER is insufficient and low, and interfunctional imbalance is recorded. There is a statistically significant relationship between the functional indices and key indicators of the ecological, economic and social spheres of sustainable development. Using DEA, areas for optimizing regional system of universities functions are identified; for five out of seven regions they are related to the function of interaction with employers. A set of measures is proposed to improve the performance of regional higher education systems.
Conclusions. Improving the performance of the regional system of universities contributes to the achievement of the region’s sustainable development goals (SDGs).
