The article examines the motive of evil as one of the plot-forming elements in the debut novel by the modern British writer Emma Healey "Elizabeth Is Missing". Based on the theories of Søren Kierkegaard, Sigmund Freud and Paul Riker, the author concludes that the motive of evil in the novel is one of the structurally meaningful elements and often has an unmotivated and even mystical character at first glance, which is explained by the choice of an unreliable narrator. The motive of evil is accompanied by motives of fear and anxiety provoked by the trauma of experiencing the lack of freedom, powerlessness and guilt. One of the techniques used in creating the motive of evil is suspense, which is understood for the purposes of this article as a phenomenon of short-term tense expectation. To create an atmosphere of the presence of evil, the author of the novel resorts to both familiar, traditional and idiostyle means.
