Бахтин и русская литература рубежа веков: два казуса

The article reconstructs Bakhtin's concept of carnivalesque laughter in relation to two authors from the turn of the century: L. N. Andreev and K. K. Sluchevsky. In his work "Author and Hero in Aesthetic Activity," Bakhtin himself referred to the latter as "a voice outside the chorus". This formula is projected onto the main character of Sluchevsky's cycle "Mephistopheles". According to Bakhtin, the most important characteristic of the carnival and carnivalesque laughter is their universality. However, Sluchevsky's "Mephistopheles" deviates from the "concert of creation", while Andreev's hero seems to "fall out" of the general merriment, proving to be alien to it.
