HSE Researchers Show How Congenital Motor Disorders Affect Brain Development
Researchers from HSE University’s Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have synthesised the findings of their previous studies on brain development in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis. Their analysis shows that impaired motor function in early childhood not only limits children’s motor experience but also affects memory, categorical thinking, and information processing. The study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Window into the Body: Scientists Develop Neural Network to Detect Risk of 15 Diseases from Retinal Images
Russian universities, with the participation of HSE University, Sber, and Z-union, have developed a neural network that can simultaneously assess the risk of 15 types of pathology from retinal photographs, including not only eye diseases but also cardiovascular conditions. The AI system can help clinicians detect potentially concerning changes at an early stage, identify signs reflecting the condition of retinal blood vessels, and determine whether a patient may need further examination. The paper has been published in Frontiers in Medicine.

Decoding Russian stock market trends through ensemble methods and sentiment analysis of social media

Annals of Operations Research. 2025. Vol. 353. P. 1123–1172.
Teplova T., Fayzulin M.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of sentiment metrics derived from social media on stock market attributes, including returns and trading volumes, within three liquidity classes in the Russian emerging market. In this paper, we conduct a textual analysis of users' posts from two Russian-language online platforms: Tinkoff Pulse and MFD. We compare different artificial intelligence algorithms to solve the problem of classifying large textual data. This allows us to determine that the Stacking ensemble method with unoptimised hyperparameters of the metaclassifier gives the best results when classifying text data (processed with TF-IDF), achievincy of about 62% for the test set. With this method, we construct a series of sentiment metrics for retail investors to study their impact on stock returns and trading volumes. The results show that investor sentiment is a significant factor explaining stock returns in most quantiles. In the process of analysing retail investor sentiment, it was found that attention and divergence indices affect retail investor behaviour for different quantiles of stock returns and trading volumes. For example, attention indicators have quite different effects on stock returns for different quantiles, suggesting the presence of several heterogeneous groups of retail investors. Young traders tend to rely on the opinions of Tinkoff Pulse users regarding first-tier (blue chip) stocks, which reflects investors' cognitive biases quite accurately. However, investors who express confidence in sentiment on the MFD platform have a different cognitive pattern, which is explained by the characterisation of users on the MFD platform. These users include older individuals with more trading experience who are more reticent to social media optimism and are more likely to perceive optimism as a signal to sell stocks. Based on the findings, this paper enhances the understanding of the role of retail investor liquidity in emerging financial markets. The lack of analysis of private investors' sentiment and explanation of market trends may not cover a significant gap in knowledge about the psychology of market participants in liquidity classes. Our results provide a foundation for future research that should be useful for investors, regulators, and developers of online social platforms.

Bounds on the derivatives of the log-cumulative distribution function of the multivariate normal distribution
Potanin B., Dolgikh S., Statistics and Probability Letters 2027 Article 110984
We derive bounds on the gradient and Hessian of the log-CDF, ln F(x), of the multivariate normal distribution. These bounds scale linearly and quadratically in ‖x‖ , respectively, with constants depending only on the covariance matrix. We demonstrate the usefulness of these bounds by proving asymptotic normality of the maximum-likelihood estimator of the multivariate probit ...

Using an unbalanced panel dataset of 123 dairy enterprises in the Leningrad Region spanning the period from 2010 to 2023, we employ stochastic frontier analysis to assess these relationships. The results indicate that subsidies ...

Динамическая взаимосвязь объемов торгов и сентимента частных инвесторов российского фондового рынка с Биткоином в периоды внешних шоков
Fayzulin M., Teplova T., Kurkin A., Прикладная эконометрика 2025 Т. 79 С. 99–121
The paper analyses the dynamic connectedness between trading volumes in the Russian stock market and the global cryptocurrency (Bitcoin) market during periods of external shocks (the COVID‑19 crisis and the Russia‑Ukraine conflict) from 2019. Using the TVP‑VAR model and estimates of system variable connectivity, liquidity spillovers (cash flows) are identified between the considered asset classes. For the first time, we analyse the network connectedness of investor sentiment for the most popular Russian stocks and Bitcoin and estimate the role of sentiment in liquidity spillovers. The  results  demonstrate  that  Bitcoin’s  daily  trading  volume  predominantly  acts  as  a  recipient of shocks from the Russian stock market. Meanwhile, the overall coherence in the system was higher during the COVID‑19 crisis period compared to the Special Military Operation (SMO). The study confirms the existence of a correlation between investor sentiment on the Russian stock and cryptocurrency markets. At the beginning of the analyzed period,in 2019, when interest in crypto assets investing began to grow rapidly, this correlation was strongly pronounced. There is a connectedness between two sentiment indices: on the stock market and crypto‑assets. The  intensity  of  the  correlation prevails  in  the  COVID‑19  inception  period,  significantly  exceeding the level observed in the SMO period. This sentiment metrics behaviour may imply adaptation of the Russian stock market to external shocks, as well as retail investors’ expectations of short‑term SMO in early 2022. ...
