The article presents an overview of commemorative collectible and investment coins dedicated to the North. Thematic issues for the last 30 years are grouped. Various aspects of the study are systematically analyzed: historical, economic and investment. The authors reviewed interesting thematic issues of commemorative coins made of precious metals of the Bank of Russia dedicated to the cultural heritage, sights and great names of pioneers of the North, flora and fauna, namely: "Exploration of the Russian Arctic", "International Polar Year", "Save Our World". An assessment of the role of monetary policy for the Russian economy, its instrumental anti-inflationary focus is given. A brief historical excursion on the topic of the first Soviet paper northern money, their participation in money circulation is also made. In addition to Russian practice, foreign experience in issuing commemorative coins dedicated to the theme of the development of the North is shown. The relevance of this study is due to the emission activities of the Bank of Russia on the release into circulation of commemorative coins made of precious and non-precious metals and investment coins made of precious metals, which are distributed both within the country and abroad. The results of the study lay the foundation for further study of new thematic emissions, including from the point of view of assessing the prospects of numismatic and investment demand.
