The article concerns the problem of late corrections in the manuscripts of Pliny the Elder, in particular the corrections that can be dated to the 15th and 16th century and arguably reproduce readings taken from the printed editions. It is obviously crucial for an editor of Pliny the Elder to distinguish between such readings (often conjectures by Renaissance scholars) and those that might descend independently from the archetype. It has been recognized that the corrector conventionally called Е3 is dependent on the printed editions (in particular, according to Reeve 2021: 83 n. 64, at earliest on the 1524 Cologne edition; I argue that this terminus post quem is to be moved to after the 1535 Basel edition), but the same appears to be true of certain correctors in mss. L (one of the correctors of this ms. uses at earliest the 1496 Brescia edition), R (one of the correctors of this ms. uses at earliest the 1516 Paris edition) and a (there are at least three late correcting hands there, one of them uses at earliest the 1524 Cologne edition, another at earliest the 1530 Basel edition, and the third possibly the 1535 Basel edition or a later one). Besides, certain isolated readings introduced by very late correctors and perhaps deriving from the printed editions can also be identified at least in mss. D and F. It seems to follow from the rather narrow timespan to which the listed termini post quos belong that this phenomenon was characteristic of a particular historical period, viz. early to mid-16th century; at the same time, its geography is wide, for the regions where the corrections in question were probably introduced in the manuscripts include simultaneously France, Italy, and the German-speaking areas of Europe. It is conceivable that the practice spread from Italy to the North.
