«Пожелания читателей во многом совпали с планами редакции»: Роль журнала «Студенческий меридиан» в формировании советской студенческой идентичности

The article examines Michel Foucault's concept of pastoral authority and its manifestation in the Soviet student magazine Student Meridian. The study examines how the editorial board under the leadership of the Central Committee of the Komsomol functioned not simply as a transmitter of ideological directives, but as an active participant in the formation of Soviet youth. The magazine aimed to foster self-discipline in students, offering them tools for self-education and participation in the construction of social norms. The analysis reveals the dual nature of pastoral authority in the magazine: it was both an instrument of top-down control and a means of encouraging collective self-discipline among students. Despite the journal's role in encouraging students to self-regulate and be guided by peers, significant boundaries remained between the editors and their audience. Ultimately, the journal served as a space where ideals of pastoral authority were simultaneously enforced and debated, offering insight into the broader mechanisms of governance and social control in the USSR.
