The aim of this article is to analyze the evolution of myth-making oeuvre of Robert Graves, an English writer and scientist, the development of authorial concept of universal myth prevailing in the forties of the XX century. For this purpose the biographical, culture-historical, structural-descriptive, historical-genetic methods of study were used. The groundwork of the historical and mythological novel ―The Golden Fleece‖ written by Robert Graves is based on Ancient Greece mythological cycle about the navigation of Argonauts. The theoretical research of multiple mythological plots gave the author strong conviction in ubiquitous expansion of the White Goddess cult and the main idea of the novel was to depict the replacement of female deity by male deity, matriarchal society by patriarchy. The plot of the novel ―King Jesus‖ is based on Books of the Old and New Covenant legends. Graves seeks to understand and reflect the depth of mythological consciousness on every level of narration. Comparative analysis of the novels ―The Golden Fleece‖ and ―King Jesus‖ makes it possible to make a conclusion about author‘s complex understanding of mythological concepts and his tendency to reconstruct the specific nature of myth structure in a comprehensively artistic way.
