Health Information Search During COVID-19: Does Culture Matter?

This paper focuses on the aspects of intersection between the COVID-19 pandemic, Google search queries, and cultural dimensions of countries. Google Trend indices of 138 countries were collected for the topic “coronavirus” and analyzed to identify the determinants of abnormal health search intensity. Registered cases of COVID-19 in a country did not predict search patterns, yet deaths registered within a country did increase health search intensity. Abnormal health search behaviours were best explained using Hofstede’s cultural dimensions of power distance, masculinity, and long-term orientation.
