Drama Activities for Fostering Metacognition
Contemporary scholars across the world working in different spheres of education came to realise
benefits of metacognition, which are linked to predictors of success and improved learning outcomes. The
English Language Teaching (ELT) Theatre (with the emphasis on teaching) is a powerful tool for
developing actors’ metacognitive skills since the use of metacognitive strategies improves the
performance and those strategic in their learning become more successful both on the stage and in the
classroom. The chapter highlights authors’ experience of staging and creating drama and retrospectively
analyzes it in terms of metacognition focusing on strategies and tasks for raising learners’ metacognitive
awareness. The insights gained could be useful for language teachers training not only young learners but
also university students.
