At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Sharper dimension-free bounds on the Frobenius distance between sample covariance and its expectation

Bernoulli: a journal of mathematical statistics and probability. 2025. Vol. 31. No. 2. P. 1664–1691.
Puchkin N., Noskov F., Spokoiny V.

We study properties of a sample covariance estimate $\widehat \Sigma$ given a finite sample of $n$ i.i.d. centered random elements in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with the covariance matrix $\Sigma$. We derive dimension-free bounds on the squared Frobenius norm of $(\widehat\Sigma - \Sigma)$ under reasonable assumptions. For instance, we show that $\smash{\|\widehat\Sigma - \Sigma\|_{\rm F}^2}$ differs from its expectation by at most $\smash{\mathcal O({\rm{Tr}}(\Sigma^2) / n)}$ with overwhelming probability, which is a significant improvement over the existing results. This allows us to establish the concentration phenomenon for the squared Frobenius distance between the covariance and its empirical counterpart in the case of moderately large effective rank of $\Sigma$.

Aleksei Samarin, Nazarenko A., Nazarenko D. et al., Machine Learning and Knowledge Extraction 2026 Vol. 8 No. 10 Article 330
Automated microscopic image analysis is essential for quantitative microbiology, yet manual acquisition and generic recognition models struggle with morphological variability and scene artifacts. We address both ends of this pipeline. First, we present a low-cost, open-source acquisition system, based on an Arduino UNO R3 microcontroller and NEMA 17 stepper motors, that automates focusing, magnification, and ...

On Calculation of Robustness and Stability of Formal Concepts Based on Delta Measure
Parkhomenko V., Kulikova S., Buzmakov A. V., Lobachevskii Journal of Mathematics 2026 Vol. 47 No. 6 P. 2979–2992
The stability of formal concepts and its generalization as robustness are considered in the paper. We use an approximation of stability in the form of Δ-measure for fast calculations. A computationally efficient method for calculating robustness based on subcontexts is presented. We also present a new method to analytically evaluate the number of preimages for ...

Poincaré series of valuations on functions over a subfield of complex numbers
Gusein-Zade S., Campillo A., Delgado F., Mathematische Zeitschrift 2026 Vol. 314 No. 1 P. 1–22
For a subfield $\K$ of the field $\C$ of complex numbers, we consider curve and divisorial valuations on the algebra $\K[[x,y]]$ of formal power series in two variables with the coefficients in $\K$. We compute the semigroup Poincar\'e series and the classical Poincar\'e series of a (discrete, rank one) valuation on it. ...

Wave scattering by a sloping beach of an arbitrary angle. Revisited: regular solution
Mishuris G., Meylan M. H., Pelinovsky E., Journal of Fluid Mechanics 2026 Vol. 1045 Article A4
In this paper, we revisit the classic problem of a wave field on a sloping beach of an arbitrary angle and propose a general approach that allows the computation of regular solutions of the problem regardless of the angle. We use the Mellin-transform technique, reducing the problem to singular integral equations with fixed-point singularities of ...

Modulational Instability and Wave Dynamics in the Rotated Modified Gardner–Whitham Equation
Flamarion M. V., Pelinovsky E., Chaos, Solitons and Fractals 2026 Vol. 213 No. 2 Article 119245
This article concerns the study of modulational instability in the rotated-modified Gardner–Whitham (rmGW) equation. This model incorporates both quadratic and cubic nonlinearities, similarly to the Gardner equation, while also retaining the fully dispersive character of the Whitham equation together with a large-scale dispersive term analogous to that in the Ostrovsky equation. Using a classical multiple-scale asymptotic expansion, we ...

To spike or not to spike: the whims of the Wonham filter in the strong noise regime
Bernardin C., Chhaibi R., Najnudel J. et al., Probability Theory and Related Fields 2026 Vol. 195 P. 1823–1875
We study the celebrated Shiryaev-Wonham filter (Wonham, W.M., in J. Soc. Ind. Appl. Math. 347–369, 1964) in its historical setup, where the hidden Markov jump process has two states. We are interested in the weak noise regime for the observation equation. Interestingly, this becomes a strong noise regime for the filtering equations. Earlier results of ...

Dimension-free Structured Covariance Estimation
Puchkin N., Rakhuba M., , in: Proceedings of Machine Learning Research. Volume 247: The Thirty Seventh Annual Conference on Learning Theory, 30-3 July 2023, Edmonton, Canada.: PMLR, 2024. P. 4276–4306.
Given a sample of i.i.d. high-dimensional centered random vectors, we consider a problem of estimation of their covariance matrix Σ with an additional assumption that Σ can be represented as a sum of a few Kronecker products of smaller matrices. Under mild conditions, we derive the first non-asymptotic dimension-free high-probability bound on the Frobenius distance between Σ and a widely used ...

Rosenthal-type inequalities for linear statistics of Markov chains
Durmus A., Moulines E., Naumov A. et al., / Series arXiv "math". 2023.
In this paper, we establish novel deviation bounds for additive functionals of geometrically ergodic Markov chains similar to Rosenthal and Bernstein-type inequalities for sums of independent random variables. We pay special attention to the dependence of our bounds on the mixing time of the corresponding chain. Our proof technique is, as far as we know, ...

Statistical inference for Bures-Wasserstein barycenters
Kroshnin A., Spokoiny V., Suvorikova A., Annals of Applied Probability 2021 Vol. 31 No. 3 P. 1264–1298
n this work we introduce the concept of Bures-Wasserstein barycenter $Q_*$, that is essentially a Fr\'echet mean of some distribution $P$ supported on a subspace of positive semi-definite Hermitian operators $\mathbb{H}_{+}(d)$. We allow a barycenter to be constrained to some affine subspace of $\mathbb{H}_{+}(d)$ and provide conditions ensuring its existence and uniqueness. We also investigate convergence and concentration properties ...

This paper is devoted to uniform versions of the Hanson-Wright inequality for a random vector X∈RnX∈Rn with independent subgaussian components. The core technique of the paper is based on the entropy method combined with truncations of both gradients of functions of interest and of the components of XX itself. Our results recover, in particular, the ...

The KLS Isoperimetric Conjecture for Generalized Orlicz Balls
Kolesnikov A., Milman E., Annals of Probability 2018 Vol. 46 No. 6 P. 3578–3615
What is the optimal way to cut a convex bounded domain K in Euclidean space (Rn,|⋅|) into two halves of equal volume, so that the interface between the two halves has least surface area? A conjecture of Kannan, Lov\'asz and Simonovits asserts that, if one does not mind gaining a universal numerical factor (independent of n) in the surface area, ...

Concentration inequalities for smooth random fields
Spokoiny V., Theory of Probability and Its Applications 2014 Vol. 58 No. 2 P. 314–323
In this paper we derive a sharp concentration inequality for the supremum of a smooth random field over a finite dimensional set. It is shown that this supremum can be bounded with high probability by the value of the field at some deterministic point plus an intrinsic dimension of the optimization problem. As an application ...
