The article is devoted to the specific features of professional reading as a major skill for students of international relations. The article relies on Russian-language research on this topic to de scribe the goals and objectives of teaching reading for professional purposes. Special attention is paid to the skills that ensure effective professional reading and take into account the specialization in ques tion. In addition to general professional reading skills — such as critical analysis and creative inter pretation — the author identifies the skill to anticipate the content on the basis of professional terms, the skill to assess the reliability of presented information, and the skill to give an expert assessment of such information.
