HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

'The Humanities Serve as a Conscience'
Maria Mizernaia studies Soviet literature and the history of book publishing. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses plans to publish a novel about besieged Leningrad, AI-provoked reflections on what it means to be human, and how novels can help satisfy our dopamine hunger.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

Crossover between types I and II in diffusive superconductors: Perturbative study
P. M. Marychev, E. G. Nikonov, Stolyarov V. S. et al., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2025 Vol. 111 No. 13 Article 134501
A common feature of both single- and multiband superconductors is the presence of a crossover between conventional type I and type II superconductivity through an intertype (IT) domain in the phase diagram of the magnetic response. In diffusive single-band superconductors, this domain is known to be very narrow due to scattering by nonmagnetic impurities. Recently, ...

Fully Microscopic Treatment of Magnetic Field Using Bogoliubov–De Gennes Approach
Vyacheslav D. Neverov, Kalashnikov A., Alexander E. Lukyanov et al., Condensed Matter 2024 Vol. 9 No. 1 Article 8
This work introduces an algorithm designed to solve the Bogoliubov–de Gennes equations of superconductivity theory. What sets this algorithm apart is its remarkable ability to precisely and consistently consider the impact of an external magnetic field, all within the microscopic approach. The computation scheme’s convergence is guaranteed by addressing the Biot–Savart equation for the field ...

Intertype superconductivity evoked by the interplay of disorder and multiple bands
P. M. Marychev, A. A. Shanenko, A. V. Vagov, Frontiers of Physics 2024 Vol. 19 No. 4 Article 43205
Nonmagnetic impurity scattering is known to shift up the Ginzburg−Landau parameter  k of a superconductor. In this case, when the system is initially in type I, it can change its magnetic response, crossing the intertype domain with  k = 1 between the two standard superconductivity types and arriving at type II. In the present work we ...

The Type-II/Type-I Crossover in Dirty Ferromagnetic Superconductors
Marychev P. M., Chen Y., The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters 2023 Vol. 14 No. 51 P. 11573–11579
In this work, we investigate the intertype (IT) domain in strongly disordered ferromagnetic superconductors with a Curie temperature lower than the superconducting critical temperature. In such unique materials, the coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism allows for the exploration of both unconventional superconductivity and the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity. The study utilizes an extended Ginzburg-Landau ...

Intertype superconductivity in ferromagnetic superconductors
Vagov A., Tiago T. Saraiva, Arkady A. Shanenko et al., Communications Physics 2023 Vol. 6 Article 284
In many pnictides the superconductivity coexists with ferromagnetism in an accessible range of temperatures and compositions. Recent experiments revealed that when the temperature of magnetic ordering Tm is below the superconducting transition temperature Tc, highly non-trivial physical phenomena occur. In this work we demonstrate the existence of a temperature window, situated between Tm and Tc, where these intrinsically type-II superconductors are ...

Tracing Vortex Clustering in a Superconductor by the Magnetic Flux Distribution
A. Vagov, E. G. Nikonov, The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters 2023 Vol. 14 No. 15 P. 3743–3748
By investigating spatial configurations of the intermediate mixed state in an intertype superconductor, it is shown that vortex clustering can be characterized by the sample averaged distribution of the penetrating magnetic field. The clustering is manifested in the two peak structure of the distribution. The second peak indicates a spot a material occupies in the ...

Vortex Interactions and Clustering in Thin Superconductors
W. Y. Córdoba-Camacho, Vagov A., A. A. Shanenko et al., The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters 2021 Vol. 12 No. 17 P. 4172–4179
Cluster formation is a focus of interdisciplinary research in both chemistry and physics. Here we discuss the exotic example of this phenomenon in the vortex matter of a thin superconductor. In superconducting films, the clustering takes place because of particular properties of the vortex interactions in the crossover or intertype regime between superconductivity types I ...
