The article studies the use of the oath in Russia in the 17th century. Firstly, it was used as a means of consolidation and legitimization of power in the struggle of various political forces. Secondly, the oath was a guarantee that the offi cial duties in relation to the sovereign were thoroughly performed. Thirdly, it was used as an off ensive or defensive strategy in political polemics. Starting from the Time of Troubles, the oath began to take shape of the state institute and was widely used as a tool to strengthen power and public order.
