HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

Gorbatov V.

The metasemantic version of two-dimensionalism developed by R. Stalnaker is considered in the connection with the opposition "logic as calculus" vs. "logic as uversal medium". Some philosophical and methodological advantages of such approach are pointed out.

Volkov D., Evstigneev M.,
The research presents a comparative analysis of John McDowell’s and Gilles Deleuze’s conceptions of transcendental empiricism. The very name of this conception bears in itself a kind of paradox, since Kant (the father of transcendental philosophy) occasionally used the term “transcendental” as “non-empirical”. The article presents an attempt to explain why these philosophers apply to ...

D. Chalmers and J. Perry on Zombie problem and the Content of Phenomenal Concepts
Moiseeva A., Semiotic studies 2021 Vol. 1 No. 3 P. 20–23
David Chalmers and John Perry both construe phenomenal concepts as irreducible to descriptive concepts of physical properties or properties, which logically supervene on them. But they draw different conclusions from this point. D. Chalmers in “The Conscious Mind” argues that the epistemic gap between phenomenal and physical properties shows that the former cannot be ontologically ...

Makeeva L., Smirnov M.,
The idea of conceptual schemes is one of the most influential and widely used notions in contemporary philosophy. Within the analytic tradition the idea occupies a fundamental position in positivist views as well as in replacing them post-posi tivist conceptions. Outside the analytic tradition a similar idea is of key importance in structuralist and post-structuralist theories. Despite the broad applicability ...

Normative dualism between descriptions of the mental and the physical is still a problem for many philosophers that provokes more and more attempts to justify it, or, on the contrary, to overcome it by means of reduction. The problem of a special normative status of mental states is usually considered in isolation from the concept ...

Why Don't 2D Jokes Fall Flat? A Two-dimensional Interpretation of Russell's Joke about the yachts
Gorbatov V., / Series HUM "Humanities". 2016. No. 131.
In recent critical comments on “On Denoting”, Saul Kripke says that Russell's famous analysis of joke about yachts in terms of degrees and graded positives is incorrect. His criticism has given rise to a number of issues related to interpreting cross-world comparisons like “Х might have been greater than it is” in doxastic contexts like ...

The problem of interpretation of comparative predicates in intensional is analyzed. While standard first-order modal logic is quite powerful, it cannot express some simple patterns of comparative cross-world predication. The starting point of the analysis is the joke about yacht size in Russell’s “On denoting”. Numeral, objectual, and mentalist interpretations are compared. I then apply ...

The present paper deals with the latest version of Chalmers’ zombie argument which constitutes a serious challenge to materialism in the philosophy of mind. That version includes T- and I- clauses aimed to cope with some recent objections.  J. Levine has demonstrated that so-called “Q factor” plays an important role in the argument justification. “Q ...

This paper deals with "Sleeping Beauty" paradox and logico-ontological aspects of rational credences and decision-making in general. We maintain the view that “de se” propositional attitudes can not be reduced to “de re and “de dicto”. The natural consequence of this is the rejection of naive referentialism in the interpretation of credences in favor of ...

Entre naturalisme et esthétisme: Quine l'extensionaliste
Schang F., Philosophia Scientiae 2005 Vol. 9 No. 2 P. 275–289

Logical Charity
Schang F., Revista Brasileira de Filosofia 2009 Vol. 233 P. 159–172
Our aim is to propose a non-referential semantics for the principle of logical charity: neither logical absolutism (one logic, one way of thinking), nor logical relativism (several logics, several ways of thinking) afford an adequate conceptual framework to interpret the meaning of any speech act. But neither of them is totally wrong, either. The point is to see ...

The paper deals with the “Frege’s puzzle” in its connection with the problem of the objects of credence. Our main thesis is that naive semantic referentialism should not be transferred to probability theory, especially to Bayesian epistemology. We focus on the recent anti-referentialist argument proposed by David Chalmers and argue that his two-dimensional (2D) approach ...

The paper deals with the so-called “golden triangle” of constitutive connections between meaning, reason, and modality. This classical triangle has been critically reassessed in contemporary analytical philosophy, but some forms of it still seem to be indispensible in studies of consciousness and AI. A lot of to-date anti-reductionist arguments are based on subtle nuances of ...

Ontological Argument: Two-Dimensional Version
Gorbatov V., / Series HUM "Humanities". 2014. No. 53.
The ontological argument has been reintroduced into the area of analytical metaphysics in 20th century due to the development of modal logic and possible worlds semantics. However, there are few attempts to approach this argument with two-dimensional possible worlds framework. The present paper provides a new two-dimensional interpretation of Anselm's proof in terms of modal ...

The paper deals with the Ontological Argument and focuses on the enigmatic Anselmian concept «majus» (within the expression «id quo majus cogitari neguit»). Four different explications of this concept are considered. The conclusion is that the most productive and non-trivial explication is based on two-dimensional approach to the possible worlds semantics. А formal reconstruction of ...
