'Cultural Studies Seeks to Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface of Everyday Things'
Maxim Zhiganov has been exploring different aspects of sound for many years—first in relation to his native Perm and then on a broader, global scale. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he talks about sound maps, the special issue of the journal Logos, and why it is important to make the familiar less clear and obvious.

At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Aleksei Samarin, Nazarenko A., Nazarenko D. et al., Big Data and Cognitive Computing 2026 Vol. 10 No. 11 P. 1–52
Camera traps are a key tool for non-invasive wildlife monitoring, yet models trained on existing benchmarks often generalize poorly to new regions due to domain shift, class imbalance, and natural variability in illumination, season, and background. We introduce PACTraD, a benchmark of 116,973 annotated camera trap images collected in a protected area of the Baikal ...

A Neural Network Approach for Generating Libration Point Orbits
Lev Pyatko, Sergey Aksenov, Regular and Chaotic Dynamics 2026 Vol. 31 No. 5 P. 794–813
In the circular restricted three-body problem, families of periodic and quasi-periodic orbits exist in the vicinity of the libration points and are of significant interest for practical applications. This work presents a neural network-based algorithm for orbit construction and station-keeping, applicable to both periodic and quasi-periodic orbits near collinear libration points. The method employs a ...

A Reproducible Microscopy Acquisition Pipeline and Microscopy-Aware Attention for Classification, Detection, and Segmentation of Microorganisms
Aleksei Samarin, Nazarenko A., Nazarenko D. et al., Machine Learning and Knowledge Extraction 2026 Vol. 8 No. 10 Article 330
Automated microscopic image analysis is essential for quantitative microbiology, yet manual acquisition and generic recognition models struggle with morphological variability and scene artifacts. We address both ends of this pipeline. First, we present a low-cost, open-source acquisition system, based on an Arduino UNO R3 microcontroller and NEMA 17 stepper motors, that automates focusing, magnification, and ...

Automated Ranking of Soybean Plots from Close-Range RGB Video via Depth Filtering and Point-Based Counting
Groshev Maksim, Rybakov Petr, Teterin N. et al., Sensors 2026 Article 6171
Manual assessment of soybean yield components, such as pod number, is laborious, time-consuming, and subjective. Existing computer-vision approaches based on object detection or instance segmentation perform poorly on close-range RGB imagery of soybean canopies due to severe occlusions, ambiguous plant boundaries, and the high cost of bounding-box annotation. To address these challenges, we propose a ...

Portnoy S., Efremov A., Voloshin A., , in: 2026 Systems of Signal Synchronization, Generating and Processing in Telecommunications (SYNCHROINFO).: Petrozavodsk: IEEE, 2026. P. 1–4.
This paper presents a deep learning-based optimization of a list-decoding algorithm for a concatenated Hamming-Reed-Solomon code transmitted over an AWGN channel with BPSK modulation. The proposed method reformulates early termination of the erasure-pattern list as a weighted regression problem, addressing class imbalance through an asymmetric Weighted Mean Squared Error (WMSE) loss function that penalizes index ...

A Model Based on Universal Filters for Image Color Correction
Aleksei Samarin, Nazarenko A., Alexander Savelev et al., Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis 2024 Vol. 34 No. 3 P. 844–854
Improving image quality is becoming an increasingly popular task, especially when working with mobile devices. One common approach to image enhancement is the use of convolutional neural networks. However, to achieve good results, such networks must be large enough, otherwise there is a risk of unwanted artifacts. In addition, large convolutional neural networks require significant ...

Aleksei Samarin, Aleksei Toropov, Alexander Savelev et al., Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis 2024 Vol. 34 No. 4 P. 1044–1052
This paper presents a study aimed at improving the detection quality of small-sized microorganisms under challenging microscopic conditions through the application of a lightweight combined image preprocessing model. We focused on the task of detecting diplococci in images obtained through dynamic sample microscopy. The proposed approach employs predefined filters for image preprocessing, combined with the ...

In this work, we describe our research aimed at developing classifiers for microbial images (bacilli images) obtained through microscopy of live (non-static) samples. We employed our proposed approach called AutoML, which is based on the automatic generation and analysis of the feature space to create the most optimal descriptors for microscopic images used in their ...

Oil Spill Segmentation in SAR Data Using ViT-UNet: Performance and Practical Insights
Denis Zuenko, Khaidarova I., Trofimova E., IEEE Access 2026 Vol. 14 P. 121339–121357
Oil spill segmentation in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images is limited by noisy annotations in publicly available datasets and by architectural choices that interact with label quality in opposing directions. First, we introduce a manually refined version of the Deep-SAR Oil Spill (SOS) dataset, in which 36.25% of masks are corrected for false positives, missed ...

Scalable machine learning approach to disordered 𝑠-wave superconductors
Vyacheslav D. Neverov, Lukyanov A., Andrey V. Krasavin et al., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2026 Vol. 113 No. 2 Article 024515
We develop a neural network approach to solve the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations in strongly disordered s-wave superconductors. The method accurately reproduces inhomogeneous gap distributions and generalizes to system sizes far larger than those used in training. It reduces computational scaling from O(N6 ) to O(N2), enabling quantitative analysis of percolation phenomena and the superconductor-insulator ...
