‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

Hybrid Competition under Fragmented Demand and Limited Consumer Choice
Bogatyrev R., Sandomirskaia M., / NRU Higher School of Economics. Series EC "Economics". 2026. No. 19(1).
This work develops a tractable model of price competition in fragmented markets where consumers consider both local and distant varieties, with cross-regional purchases subject to stochastic costs. Global competition and full localization emerge as polar cases; hybrid competition is not merely intermediate and exhibits distinctive features such as an endogenous price ceiling and non-monotonic entry ...

Verification of Bounded Rationality Models of Price Dispersion on an Online Marketplace Data
Bazenkov N., Elena Glamozdina, Maria Kuznetsova et al., Advances in Systems Science and Applications 2023 Vol. 23 No. 1 P. 129–151
We explore how well the models of bounded rationality explain price dispersion observed in Internet price-comparison sites. This paper considers three hypotheses about the strategic origin of price dispersion in homogeneous product online sales. Two of them are εequilibrium and quantal-response equilibrium (QRE) in a pure Bertrand setting, they involve the bounded rationality of sellers. ...

Price competition in finite markets with a rare good and private consumer valuations
Шавшин Р. К., Sandomirskaia M., / NRU Higher School of Economics. Series EC "Economics". 2021. No. 248.
We consider a market with two sellers, each having one unit of identical product, who compete for potential buyers with one-unit demand and a private valuation of this product. First, firms simultaneously post their prices. Then buyers observe these prices and choose a seller to submit a request for purchase depending on their private valuation ...

Price dispersion in Internet sales: data from an online marketplace contradict lab experiments
Bazenkov N., Glamozdina E., Kuznetsova M. et al., / NRU Higher School of Economics. Series EC "Economics". 2019. No. 219.
This paper considers three hypotheses about the strategic origin of price dispersion in homogeneous product online sales. The first two are the $\varepsilon$-equilibrium and the quantal-response equilibrium (QRE) in a pure Bertrand setting involving the boundedly rational behavior of sellers. The third introduces the share of loyal consumers into the model of competition. These hypotheses ...
