Of pilgrims and poets, prisoners and politics: the story of Egyptology in Russia

This chapter presents a survey of a thousand years of Russian interest in Egypt, from the world of the Kievan Rus’ to the Russian Federation. At its simplest level, it can be divided into medieval, pre-Soviet, Soviet and post-Soviet phases, mixed in with periods of considerable turbulence. As well as providing a chronological account of events, this chapter seeks to emphasise the intertwined destinies of Russian politics and Russian Egyptology, and the often disparate paths of Russian and Western scholarship. As will be shown, the history of Russian Egyptology is exceptionally rich – but it has all too often remained exclusive to Russians. This chapter aims to go some way towards addressing this problem.
