Computation of the semantic complexity of a given word is a task that has long been present in linguistics in relation to a variety of fields: theoretical semantics, lexicography, teaching, corpus linguistics and computational linguistics (in particular, automatic annotation of texts indicating their semantic complexity levels and creation of corpora and subcorpora of texts of varying degrees of complexity). The paper proposes a clarification of the concept of the semantic complexity, analyzes data from several surveys of Russian native speakers, considers several factors influencing the speakers’ feeling of a given word as being complex or easy and its possession level, and calculates the contribution of each of these factors. We propose several further steps towards solving the problem of determining the semantic complexity of words.
