‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

Natural conditions and sociocultural development in the Mid-Kama region (cis-Ural, Russia) over the last ten millennia: insights from the Shabunichi‑1 peat core
Batalova V., Sannikov P., Pereskokov M. et al., Vegetation History and Archaeobotany 2025 Vol. 34 P. 439–458
The Ural Mountains represent a distinctive bioecological and climatic boundary between Europe and Asia, simultaneously uniting them through cultural, ethnic, and economic ties throughout history. To investigate these complex human-environment interactions during the last ~ 10,000, we obtained a peat core Shabunichi-1 and analyzed it using AMS radiocarbon dating, loss-on-ignition, pollen, non-pollen palynomorphs, micro- and ...

Agafonova A. B., Научный диалог 2023 Т. 12 № 8 С. 348–371
The article examines the social response to the introduction of new electric technologies (street lighting and trams) in cities, as well as the limitations on their use during periods of fuel crises. The concepts of “energy transition” and “shift towards consumerism” serve as the methodological basis for the study. The author relies on L. B. Kafengauz’s periodization when analyzing changes in ...

The interest in using the energy of falling water for the electrification of industry and cities arose among electrical engineers at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries. The successful experience of building hydroelectric power plants in Western Europe and North America reinforced this interest. Russian engineers developed projects for the utilization of energy from the ...

This article examines the controversy over soil salinization that pitted proponents of drainage against promoters of Vasilii Vil´iams’ grassland rotations during the great “ideological discussions” that agitated scientific circles during late Stalinism. The controversy between the former, the drenazhniki, led by Viktor Kovda, and the latter, the travopol´shchiki, gathering around Vagram Shaumian, shows that, despite a considerable ...
