Physicists Discover What Happens Inside a Stable Vortex
Large vortices with characteristic spiral arms are often observed in the atmosphere and the ocean. Physicists from HSE University have explained how these structures form and why they retain their shape. The researchers found that velocities at points located along the same vortex arc remain correlated even over long distances. At the same time, this correlation weakens rapidly with increasing distance from the vortex centre. These differences help explain the formation of spiral arms and may improve models of atmospheric and oceanic currents. The findings have been published in Physical Review Fluids.

Batalova V., Sannikov P., Pereskokov M. et al., Vegetation History and Archaeobotany 2025 Vol. 34 P. 439–458
The Ural Mountains represent a distinctive bioecological and climatic boundary between Europe and Asia, simultaneously uniting them through cultural, ethnic, and economic ties throughout history. To investigate these complex human-environment interactions during the last ~ 10,000, we obtained a peat core Shabunichi-1 and analyzed it using AMS radiocarbon dating, loss-on-ignition, pollen, non-pollen palynomorphs, micro- and ...

Caswell B. A., Klein E. S., Alleway H. K. et al., Fish and Fisheries 2020 Vol. 21 No. 4 P. 774–796
The concept of “blue growth,” which aims to promote the growth of ocean economies while holistically managing marine socioecological systems, is emerging within national and international marine policy. The concept is often promoted as being novel; however, we show that historical analogies exist that can provide insights for contemporary planning and implementation of blue growth. ...
