'I Wish That People Would Place Greater Trust in Science'
When Tatiana Eremicheva chose Fundamental and Computational Linguistics as her field of study, she thought it would be about learning languages. Instead, she discovered it was about helping people. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses science as a way of understanding the world, billiards as a team-building activity, and why learning to read is not always as easy as it seems.

Immunity to Chaos: How Personal Resources Help Us Cope with the Challenges of a Turbulent World
International conflicts, crises and digital overload—the modern world puts our minds to the test every day. Traditional psychology often focuses on the consequences: anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic disorders. But what if we looked at the problem differently—through the lens of the resources that prevent us from breaking down? Psychological immunity is precisely this set of resources. Alena Zolotareva and her group, Psychological Immunity as a Resource for Positive Functioning, are developing an integrative model of this phenomenon, adapting diagnostic tools and preparing for large-scale empirical research. Why do psychologists need to collaborate with medical professionals, and how could their research transform preventive care in clinics and corporations?

How to Assess Students Knowledge in the Age of AI
A researcher at HSE University has proposed a flowchart to help lecturers decide how to assess students who use artificial intelligence. It shows where the use of AI should be restricted and where it can be incorporated into the learning process. The article has been published in IT Professional.

Modeling neurodegenerative disorders in zebrafish
Bashirzade A., Zabegalov K., Volgin A. et al., Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews 2022 Vol. 138 Article 104679
Neurodegeneration is a major cause of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, multiple and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, pontocerebellar hypoplasia, dementia and other related brain disorders. Their complex pathogenesis commonly includes genetic and neurochemical deficits, misfolded protein toxicity, demyelination, apoptosis and mitochondrial dysfunctions. Albeit differing in specific underlying mechanisms, neurodegenerative disorders typically display evolutionarily conserved mechanisms across taxa. Here, ...

Early Middle Pleistocene Fauna Of Fossil Rodents And Loess-Paleosol Series Of The Pekla Key Section (Taman Peninsula, Russia)
Markova A., Sycheva S., Tatiana M. Gorbacheva, Geography, Environment, Sustainability 2023 Vol. 16 No. 2 P. 31–39

Accuracy of Rats in Discriminating Visual Objects Is Explained by the Complexity of Their Perceptual Strategy
Djurdjevic V., Ansuini A., Bertolini D. et al., Current Biology 2018 Vol. 28 No. 7 P. 1005–1015
As the popularity of rodents in the vision research continues to grow, some questions remain unanswered. One of the key questions is - can rodents perform a "proper" higher level vision task such as object recognition. In our paper we present the new research findings which demonstrate that, despite having much poorer visual abilities compared ...

Notes on the hindlimb myology and syndesmology of the Mesozoic toothed bird Hesperornis regalis (Aves: Hesperornithiformes)
Zinoviev A., Journal of Systematic Palaeontology 2011 Vol. 9 No. 1 P. 65–84
Partial reconstruction of hindlimb myology and syndesmology of Hesperornis regalis, based on fossil and extant comparative anatomical material, is provided. Possessing a combination of morphological features characteristic of modern loons and grebes, H. regalis was somewhat closer to loons in overall hindlimb anatomy. The acetabular foramen indicates that the femoral head of Hesperornis had a more restricted excursion in the ...

Birds hunting rodents: Two cases from tropical forests of Southern Vietnam
Kuznetsov G. V., Zinoviev A., Вестник Тверского государственного университета. Серия: Биология и экология 2016 Vol. 1 P. 55–63
We describe two previously unknown cases of birds hunting rodents in tropical forests of Southern Vietnam. Number of belly-banded squirrels ( Callosciurus flavimanus ), caught in wire traps, shows a strong correlation with the number of crested serpent eagles ( Spilornis cheela ). Oriental pied hornbills ( Anthracoceros albirostris ) hunt red spiny rats ( ...

Kirillova I. V., Shidlovsky F. K., Zinoviev A., Integrative Zoology 2019 Vol. 14 No. 3 P. 270–279
A total of 175 metapodials (MP) of Pleistocene and early Holocene bison (Bison priscus Boj.) from the vast area of northeast Russia were studied. MP were attributed to males and females both visually and statistically. Data on the withers height of bison from northeast Russia are provided. Stress markers were recorded, including so-called "buttresses." With ...
