The paper discusses main non-standard strategies of sya-verbs found in the learner corpus of Russian student texts (CoRST). Such strategies are as follows: decausative and reflexive instead of passive; variation of active and passive participial suffixes; blurring the strict definition of transitivity; metonymy of active verbal forms as a calque from English academic texts.
