‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Prediction of protein-protein interactions using point transformer and spherical Convex Hull graphs
David Arteaga, Poptsova M., Computational and Structural Biotechnology Journal 2026 Vol. 31 P. 82–93
Accurate predictions and large-scale identification of protein-protein interactions (PPIs) are crucial for understanding their inherent biological mechanisms and protein functions in virtually all biological processes. Nowadays, graph-based deep learning models have made significant contributions in modeling proteins with physicochemical and geometric features. However, most of these models rely on conventional graph construction methods, such as ...

oneering transcription factors from the Yamanaka cocktail carry out cell reprogramming. These proteins bind to heterochromatin, promote its discovery, and attract proteins to alter the epigenetic landscape and activate transcription. However, there is no information in the literature about which chromatin proteins are attracted through direct protein-protein interactions with pioneer transcription factors. In this paper, ...

Diverse Interactions of Sterols with Amyloid Precursor Protein Transmembrane Domain Can Shift Distribution Between Alternative Amyloid-β Production Cascades in Manner Dependent on Local Lipid Environment
Volynsky P., Urban A., Pavlov K. et al., International Journal of Molecular Sciences 2025 Vol. 26 No. 2 Article 553
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathogenesis is correlated with the membrane content of various lipid species, including cholesterol, whose interactions with amyloid precursor protein (APP) have been extensively explored. Amyloid-β peptides triggering AD are products of APP cleavage by secretases, which differ depending on the APP and secretase location relative to ordered or disordered membrane microdomains. We used high-resolution NMR to probe ...

Konshina A., Bocharov E., Konovalova E. et al., International Journal of Molecular Sciences (Швейцария) 2024 Vol. 25 No. 21 Article 11370
Non-immunoglobulin-based scaffold proteins (SPs) represent one of the key therapeutic target-specific and high-affinity binders in modern medicine. Among their cellular targets are signaling receptors, in particular, receptor tyrosine kinases, whose dysfunction leads to the development of cancer and other serious diseases. Successful applications of SPs have been reported for HER receptor type 2 (HER2), a member of the human ...

Diversity of Structural, Dynamic, and Environmental Effects Explain a Distinctive Functional Role of Transmembrane Domains in the Insulin Receptor Subfamily
Bershatsky Y., Kuznetsov A., Idiatullina A. et al., International Journal of Molecular Sciences 2023 Vol. 24 No. 4 Article 3906
Human InsR, IGF1R, and IRR receptor tyrosine kinases (RTK) of the insulin receptor subfamily play an important role in signaling pathways for a wide range of physiological processes and are directly associated with many pathologies, including neurodegenerative diseases. The disulfide-linked dimeric structure of these receptors is unique among RTKs. Sharing high sequence and structure homology, the receptors differ dramatically ...

A uniquely stable trimeric model of SARS-CoV-2 spike transmembrane domain
Aliper E. T., Krylov Nikolay A., Nolde Dmitry E. et al., International Journal of Molecular Sciences 2022 Vol. 23(16) Article 9221
Understanding fusion mechanisms employed by SARS-CoV-2 spike protein entails realistic transmembrane domain (TMD) models, while no reliable approaches towards predicting the 3D structure of transmembrane (TM) trimers exist. Here, we propose a comprehensive computational framework to model the spike TMD only based on its primary structure. We performed amino acid sequence pattern matching and compared the molecular hydrophobicity potential ...

Insulin and IGF-1 receptors transmembrane domain dimers: structure prediction and possible role in activation
Kuznetsov A., Bennasroune A., Maurice P. et al., FEBS Open Bio 2021 Vol. 11 No. Suppl.1 P. 219–219
The receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) superfamily comprises many different cell-surface receptors having similar membrane organization and function with signal transduction occuring in the dimeric state. Insulin receptor (IR) and type 1 insulin-like growth factor receptor (IGF1R) differ from other RTKs being constitutively homodimeric transmembrane glycoproteins, and molecular mechanisms of their activation still remain elusive. Current ...

Transmembrane peptides as a new strategy to inhibit neuraminidase-1 activation
Albrecht C., Kuznetsov A., Appert-Collin A. et al., Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology 2020 Vol. 8 P. 611121
Sialidases, or neuraminidases, are involved in several human disorders such as neurodegenerative, infectious and cardiovascular diseases, and cancers. Accumulative data have shown that inhibition of neuraminidases, such as NEU1 sialidase, may be a promising pharmacological target, and selective inhibitors of NEU1 are therefore needed to better understand the biological functions of this sialidase. In the ...
