In this paper, an overview of slow wave systems and metamaterials using in devices intended for application in the area of biomedical engineering is presented. Short characteristic of physical and engineering specifications of slow waves systems and metamaterials are listed. In addition, possible variants of upgrading an exciting engineering solution by dint of slow wave systems and metamaterials application are offered.

Metamaterials on Helix Structures with Abnormal Dispersion

Reasons of appearance and possible ways of frequency dispersion control in metamaterials based on helix structures with the help of a longitudinal propagation ground plane and a ground plane with capacitive conductivity in azimuth direction are considered. It is shown that existence of metamaterial constructions based on helix systems with abnormal dispersion is a perspective way of reduction if devices longitudinal dimensions keeping the same time their electrodynamics characteristics and parameters. In the case with frequency rise up the wave phase velocity also increases keeping the structure electrical length and the presence of slow-wave coefficient allows structure dimensions decreasing.

Computer Model of a Frequency-Selective Surface on Mushroom-Shaped Metamaterial

This paper presents a computer model of a FSS based on mushroom-shaped metamaterial. The model is based on the calculation of equivalent distributed inductance and distributed capacitance of the unit cell of the surface according to its geometric dimensions. The computer model is realized as the “META” program based on MathCAD ver.15 software and provides an opportunity to investigate the dispersion characteristics of the frequency-selective surface of a “Maltese cross” mushroom-shaped metamaterial.

Ferromagnet/Superconductor Hybrid Magnonic Metamaterials

In this work, a class of metamaterials is proposed on the basis of ferromagnet/superconductor hybridization for applications in magnonics. These metamaterials comprise of a ferromagnetic magnon medium that is coupled inductively to a superconducting periodic microstructure. Spectroscopy of magnetization dynamics in such hybrid evidences formation of areas in the medium with alternating dispersions for spin wave propagation, which is the basic requirement for the development of metamaterials known as magnonic crystals. The spectrum allows for derivation of the impact of the superconducting structure on the dispersion: it takes place due to a diamagnetic response of superconductors on the external and stray magnetic fields. In addition, the spectrum displays a dependence on the superconducting critical state of the structure: the Meissner and the mixed states of a type II superconductor are distinguished. This dependence hints toward nonlinear response of hybrid metamaterials on the magnetic field. Investigation of the spin wave dispersion in hybrid metamaterials shows formation of allowed and forbidden bands for spin wave propagation. The band structures are governed by the geometry of spin wave propagation: in the backward volume geometry the band structure is conventional, while in the surface geometry the band structure is nonreciprocal and is formed by indirect band gaps.

Exotic Two-Dimensional Structure: The First Case of Hexagonal NaCl

NaCl is one of the simplest compounds and was thought to be well-understood, and yet, unexpected complexities related to it were uncovered at high pressure and in low-dimensional states. Here, exotic hexagonal NaCl thin films on the (110) diamond surface were crystallized in the experiment following a theoretical prediction based on ab initio evolutionary algorithm USPEX. State-of-the-art calculations and experiments showed the existence of a hexagonal NaCl thin film, which is due to the strong chemical interaction of the NaCl film with the diamond substrate.
