Application of the Inverse Scattering Technique to deep water waves
P. 277-282.
We develop a method for the application of the Inverse Scattering Technique to the analysis of surface
water waves and present here some evidence on its efficiency. The general idea is to interpret nonlinear
wave groups in terms of soliton-type structures - envelope solitons in the framework of the integrable
nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Such analysis can improve understanding of the nonlinear wave group
dynamics and, in particular, could help to elaborate tools for short-term forecasting of dangerous waves
in the sea. The technique may also be applied to the problem of the information decoding in soliton based
optical transmission lines.

The observation of a wave group persisting for more than 200 periods in the direct numerical simulation of nonlinear unidirectional irregular water waves in deep water is discussed. The simulation conditions are characterized by parameters realistic for broad-banded waves in the sea. Through solution of the associated scattering problem for the nonlinear Schr€odinger equation, the group is ...

In this paper, we study the transformation of surface envelope solitons traveling over a bottom step in water of a finite depth. Using the transformation coefficients earlier derived in the linear approximation, we find the parameters of transmitted pulses and subsequent evolution of the pulses in the course of propagation. Relying on the weakly nonlinear theory, the ...

Arisingmodulations of surface gravitywaves in a shallow-water resonator under harmonic forcing is discovered in laboratory experiments. Different types of modulations are found. When certain conditions are satisfied (appropriate frequency and sufficient force of excitation), the standing waves become modulated, and the envelopes of standing waves propagate in the channel. Strongly nonlinear numerical simulations of the Euler equations are performed reproducing ...

Nonlinear Schrodinger equation is derived for weakly modulated nonlinear wave packets in the infinite-depth water flow with inhomogeneous vorticity. Governing 2-D equations are written in Lagrangian variables. Nonlinear Schrodinger equation is obtained in the third order of perturbation theory taking into account weak non-uniform vortex current. Two limiting cases are analyzed. The first one corresponds ...

Solitons are coherent structures that describe the nonlinear evolution of wave localizations in hydrodynamics, optics, plasma and Bose-Einstein condensates. While the Peregrine breather is known to amplify a single localized perturbation of a carrier wave of finite amplitude by a factor of three, there is a counterpart solution on zero background known as the degenerate ...

We propose a method for the analysis of groups of unidirectional waves on the surface of deep water, which is based on spectral data of the scattering problem in the approximation of a nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The main attention is paid to the robustness and accuracy of the numerically obtained spectral data. Various methods of choosing the wave ...

The transition of powerful gravitational waves, created by the coalescence of massive black hole binaries, into electromagnetic radiation in external magnetic fields is considered. In contrast to the previous calculations of the similar effect we study the realistic case of the gravitational radiation frequency below the plasma frequency of the surrounding medium. The gravitational waves ...

Many astrophysical sources that emit narrow radio-frequency spectral lines are believed to be sets of molecular condensation, each of which works as a maser, so that the whole set produces a characteristic spectrum. The forms of these spectra vary with time on various time-scales from months to dozens of minutes. We analysed the ultra-short variations ...
