The 'Second Shift' Is Not Why Women Avoid News
Women are more likely than men to avoid political and economic news, but the reasons for this behaviour are linked less to structural inequality or family-related stress than to personal attitudes and the emotional perception of news content. This conclusion was reached by HSE researchers after analysing data from a large-scale survey of more than 10,000 residents across 61 regions of Russia. The study findings have been published in Woman in Russian Society.

Почему хантыйские имена нуждаются в определенном артикле?

С. 79–82.
Mikhailov S.

Abstract for a talk on discoursive functions of the Northern Khanty possessive marker -en [POSS.2SG] and the grammatical properties of human names. This marker highly resembles a definite article. In Northern Khanty human names are grammatically nouns (are of type <e, t>), which is supporte by ethnographical data. For this reason these names necessarily bear this marker.

Juxtapositional vs. possessive-like encoding in Russian specificational constructions
Logvinova N., Russian linguistics 2026 Vol. 50 Article 11
This paper presents the first in-depth corpus-based study of a previously overlooked syntactic variation in Russian: the competition between juxtapositional (Nominative) and possessive-like (Genitive) encoding of the second noun (the term) in specificational constructions (e.g., ponjatie čest’ (notion.NOM honor.NOM) vs. ponjatie česti (notion.NOMhonor.GEN) ‘the notion of honor’). While typological research has established cross-linguistic preferences for one encoding strategy over another, intralinguistic variation ...

Лично-числовая асимметрия: согласование пассивных миративов в казымском диалекте хантыйского языка
Starchenko A., Toldova S., Типология морфосинтаксических параметров 2023 Т. 6 № 1 С. 130–148
The study focuses on a previously unrecorded model of split agreement in the mirative paradigm in Kazym Khanty. Split agreement is found when comparing active and passive mirative constructions, as well as in a limited set of uses of non-finite forms. In the passive voice, unlike the active voice, the 3rd person is unmarked and the ...

No ‘iota’ type-shifter in Kazym Khanty
Tiutiunnikova V., Mikhailov Stiopa, Golosov F., Proceedings of Sinn und Bedeutung 2025 No. 29 P. 1593–1608
In this paper, we present new challenging data from Kazym Khanty (a Uralic language spoken in Western Siberia, Russia): in this articleless language, bare singular and bare dual NPs in argument positions can receive indefinite readings on par with definite ones, contradicting the predictions of the classic neo-Carlsonian approach (Chierchia, 1998; Dayal, 2004). We argue ...

The emergence of hierarchical alignment in Northern Khanty: a comparative dialectal corpus study
Muraviev N., Linguistica Uralica 2025 Vol. 61 No. 2 P. 106–130
This study investigates the morphosyntactic coding of core arguments in Northern Khanty, with a focus on the use of active/passive voice and subjective/objective conjugation. The goal is to offer a more detailed understanding of the coding patterns across dialects. To achieve this, I analyze corpus data from four Northern Khanty dialects: Obdorsk, Shuryshkary, Tegi, and Kazym Khanty, using ...

The influence of internal possessors on argument coding in Northern Khanty
Muraviev N., Voprosy Jazykoznanija 2024 Vol. 5 P. 65–79
The study examines contexts in Northern Khanty where the presence of internal possessors in the noun phrases of the core arguments influences their morphosyntactic coding. Based on the corpus data from the Kazym dialect of Khanty, I investigate contexts in which the presence of a third-person topical possessor in the agent or patient NP leads ...

Reflexive Possessives in Tungusic: Comparison of Bystraja Even and Uilta
Buzanov A., Toldova S., Ural-Altaic Studies 2025 No. 2(57) P. 17–35
This paper examines reflexive possessive constructions in two Tungusic languages, Bystraja Even and Uilta. Its focus is on reflexive possessive agreement, an uncommon feature that has been documented in only a handful of language families. We investigate the morphological, syntactic, and semantic characteristics of these constructions, showing how each language implements them in both similar ...

Noun complement clauses with a demonstrative determiner in Russian
Knyazev M., Journal of Slavic Linguistics 2023 Vol. 31 No. FASL 30 issue P. 1–19
A lesser-known type of noun complement clause construction in Russian is discussed, in which N + čto-clause is preceded by the distal demonstrative tot. The construction involves a non-anaphoric non-deictic use of tot, which depends on the presence of a declarative (or relative) CP. Special distributional properties of the construction are discussed, such as its ...

Севернохантыйская посессивность и типология детерминации
Mikhailov S., Родной язык: лингвистический журнал 2023 № 2 С. 6–51
In many Uralic languages, possessive agreement markers form a special determiner system. Following several studies that argue for grammaticalization of Uralic possessives into determiners, the current study describes the semantics of four such determiners in the Kazym dialect of Northern Khanty, based on original field data, and sets them against the background of recent results ...

Semantics of the Northern Khanty Salient Article: Definiteness, salience, and obviation
Mikhailov S., Voprosy Jazykoznanija 2024 No. 1 P. 7–38
Uralic possessive agreement markers often function as determiners. This paper presents a case study of the Northern Khanty (Kazym dialect) 2sg Possessive that developed into a “salient article”. The Salient Article is definite as it requires informational uniqueness and familiarity, but its distribution is narrower than the distribution of previously described definite determiner types. It ...
