Poetic synonyms are an integral part of Old English poetry. Their hierarchy reveals the systematic organization of poetic language and its canonization through verse. This article examines the system of metrical ranks, which was scrutinized by O.A. Smirnitskaya in “Beowulf,” through corpus data.
