At present, aviation equipment is equipped with a modern electronic component base (ECB). Virtually every electronic control system built into this equipment can not do without integrated circuits (ICs). In most cases, Russian companies use IMI of foreign manufacture to design such systems (China, USA, Japan, etc.).
The standard procedures used in the engineering practice for the dependability prediction of electronic equipment (analytical methods) have a number of significant limitations. Turning to numerical methods, allowing the removal of these limitations, causes the necessity to create the failure model of electronic components for the dependability prediction of electronic components. The aim of the present research is to improve the design work quality by improving the dependability prediction of electronic equipment, taking into account the reliability, durability and storability of electronic components. To develop the failure model, the methods of the dependability theory, the probability theory and computational mathematics have been developed. A failure model of electronic components, representing the functional, linking the implementation of the running time and the base random variable, has been created. In this case, the model parameters have been calculated on the basis of the data on dependability characteristics of their dependencies on the modes and conditions for using the electronic components, as shown on a specific example. Unlike the standardized failure model of electronic components, the proposed model permits simultaneously to take into account the limitations, imposed by the characteristics of reliability, durability and storability, normalized in the Data Sheet.
The report covers the method of the estimated life of electronic devices of control and communication systems at the stage of their development. Mathematical model of life control and communication systems and electronic devices are provided. It is shown that the value of the life of control and communication systems significantly depends on the coefficient of variation of life of electronic devices.
Constant growth of spacecraft operating life requirements leads to creating equipment which fits these requirements. From this point of view, specifically durability prediction allows to evaluate the potential of creating equipment with a long operating life. On early stages of equipment’s development analytical methods of durability prediction are used. Obviously, the more precise the estimation is, the more likely that the practical test will confirm the durability predictions. Therefore, improving the engineering techniques of the durability prediction is a relevant problem.
The objective of this research is to improve the quality of design work by enhancing the engineering techniques of the durability prediction, which raise the authenticity of the evaluations.
Life of the equipment are calculated using the statistical modelling method (Monte-Carlo method). This method takes into consideration probabilistic characteristics of constituent elements’ life.
As a result, the problem of predicting operating life of electronic equipment using the reference data on early stages of development is solved. An analysis of standardized method of durability prediction was performed which revealed existing limitations for using this method when predicting operating life of electronic equipment. An alternate, statistical method of predicting operating life of electronic equipment was suggested and a software implementation was created. Developed software was tested and verified. Analytical experiments were performed to show the authenticity of the suggested method and to compare it to the standardized one.
Thus, results of the performed research show that the standardized method is applicable only for calculating the minimum operating time. Also, it was concluded that the truncation parameter of element’s life distribution, variation coefficient of life and some specific qualities of dependability prediction scheme have to be taken into consideration when predicting durability of electronic equipment.

In contrast to classic analyses which were concentrated on reliability of technical resources and structures built from them, dependability is based on multi-disciplinary approach to theory, technology, and maintenance of a system considered to be a multifaceted amalgamation of technical, information, organization, software and human (users, administrators, supervisors, etc.) resources. Diversity of processes being realized (data processing, system management, system monitoring, etc.), their concurrency and their reliance on in-system intelligence often severely impedes construction of strict mathematical models and calls for application of intelligent and soft computing methods.

The articles selected for this volume illustrate the variety of topics that must be included in system dependability analysis: tools, methodologies and standards for modelling, design and simulation of the systems, security and confidentiality in information processing, specific issues of heterogeneous, today often wireless, computer networks, or management of transportation networks.
Building upon a long tradition of scientifi c conferences dealing with problems of reliability in technical systems, in 2006 Department of Computer Engineering at Wrocław University of Technology established DepCoS-RELCOMEX series of events in order to promote a comprehensive approach to evaluation of system performability which is now commonly called dependability.
Contemporary complex systems integrate variety of technical, information, soft ware and human (users, administrators and management) resources. Their complexity comes not only from involved technical and organizational structures but mainly from complexity of information processes that must be implemented in specific operational environment (data processing, monitoring, management, etc.). In such a case traditional methods of reliability evaluation focused mainly on technical levels are insufficient and more innovative, multidisciplinary methods of dependability analysis must be applied.
Selection of submissions for these proceedings exemplify diversity of topics that must be included in such analyses: tools, methodologies and standards for modelling, design and simulation of the systems, security and confidentiality in information processing, specific issues of heterogeneous, today often wireless, computer networks, or management of transportation networks. In addition, this edition of the conference hosted the 5th CrISS-DESSERT Workshop devoted to the problems of security and safety in critical information systems.
