The paper is concerned with the problem of cooperation and activism in apartment houses in Saint Petersburg. Based on the theoretical approaches of M.Olson, S.Lindenberg, R.Oldenburg, and J.Kotus we investigate how environmental factors (e.g., presence of a “third place” nearby) can be connected to the probability of any collective actions in the house, both online and offline. Analyzing both the interviews and the content of “VKontakte” Internet groups we conclude that (1) cooperation and activism do not occur simultaneously; (2) “third places” do not create stimulating conditions for collective actions; (3) probability of cooperation depends on the age and skills of the residents; (4) presence of some objects of collective interest (e.g., parking or playground) increases the probability of cooperation and activism.
