HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

Exciton diffusion in MoS2 monolayer from first-principles molecular dynamics
Fominykh N., Stegailov V., Journal of Chemical Physics 2025 Vol. 163 No. 11 Article 114704
First-principles modeling of exciton dynamics coupled with lattice vibrations is important for understanding exciton mobility, which is crucial for various applications. In order to shed light on such coupled exciton–lattice dynamics, in this paper, we use a restricted open-shell Kohn–Sham approach, which is a computationally efficient method for electronic structure calculations in the lowest excited ...

Asatryan G., Kalpakian J., Governance: An international journal of policy, administration and institutions 2022 Vol. 35 No. 1 P. 333–335
The COVID-19 pandemic brought the state's role back to the forefront of domestic and international political life. Unlike private actors, the state showed that it could cope with fundamental existential problems that face its population. Some states deeply involved in their health-care system had better results than those who had ceded the sector to private, ...

Mixing in two-dimensional shear flow with smooth fluctuations
Ivchenko N., Lebedev V., Vergeles S. S., Physical Review E - Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics 2024 Vol. 110 No. 1 Article 015102
Chaotic variations in flow speed up mixing of scalar fields via intensified stirring. This paper addresses the statistical properties of a passive scalar field mixing in a regular shear flow with random fluctuations against its background. We consider two-dimensional flow with shear component dominating over smooth fluctuations. Such flow is supposed to model passive scalar ...

Revolution and Democracy in the Twenty-First Century
Andrey Korotayev, Andrew Zhdanov, Leonid Grinin et al., Cross-Cultural Research 2025 Vol. 59 No. 2 P. 180–215
In this article, we analyze an inverted U-shaped relationship between the type of regime (on the autocracy-democracy scale) and the risks of revolutionary destabilization. Anocracies tend to be more vulnerable to revolutionary destabilization than full autocracies or full (consolidated) democracies. We also point to a strong positive association between the weakening of autocracies and the ...

Ivchenko N., Vergeles S. S.,
We study statistical properties of the passive scalar advection in a 2D flow that consist of a steady-state shear flow and a relatively weak smooth random component taking into account the effects of finite weak diffusion. The model is closely related to the dynamics of passive scalar transfer inside coherent vortices emerging as a result ...

On Undecidability of Subset Theory for Some Monoids
S. M. Dudakov, Journal of Physics: Conference Series 2021 Vol. 1902 Article 012060
Early we (with B. N. Karlov) have proved the following claim for the infinite cyclic monoid H. Let exp H be an algebra of finite subsets of H with the same operation, exp H must be a monoid again. So the theory of exp H is equivalent to elementary arithmetic. Thus, the theory of the monoid ...

Flying with the Stars: Performance, Loyalty, and Awards in the Soviet Air Force during WWII
Szakonyi D., Finkel E., / Series "Working Papers". 2023.
One of the main debates in the study of authoritarianism concerns whether autocrats promote and reward agents based on performance or ideological loyalty to stave off the threat of elite coups. Yet autocrats often face existential crisis situations, particularly military conflict, where their survival depends on the performance of lower-level cadres defending the regime. In ...

Transport Mechanism in Nafion Revealed by Detailed Comparison of 1H and 17O Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Diffusion Coefficients
Privalov A., Vitaly V. Sinitsyn, Vogel M., The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters 2023 Vol. 14 No. 30 P. 9335–9340
We use 1H and 17O NMR static field gradient diffusometry to measure self-diffusion coefficients of protons (DH) and oxygens (DO) in Nafion 212 with various hydration levels (λ = 4–18). For all samples and both nuclei, we obtain activation energies (Ea) of ≈0.19 eV. Analyzing the hydration-level dependence of DH and DO, we find DO/DH ≈ 1 at λ ≈ 18, resembling ...

In the article, the author analyzes the work of the great Russian historian, writer and poet Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamzin. Starting with the “Letters of the Russian Traveler”, his contemporaries perceived him as an obvious Westerner and supporter of republican rule. It was he who introduced the European words “humanity”, “energy”, “catastrophe” into the Russian language, enriched the ...

Helium bubbles diffusion in aluminum: Influence of gas pressure
Antropov A., Stegailov V., Journal of Nuclear Materials 2023 Vol. 573 Article 154123
The influence of helium pressure on the mechanisms of diffusion of the He-filled nanobubbles in fcc Al is investigated by the classical molecular dynamics. It is shown that at pressures <20 kbar gas suppresses self-diffusion, while the concentration of adatoms, rather than their mobility, plays a key role. However, as the pressure increases to values at which ...

Despite the fact that autocracies are frequently portrayed in art as states where all power belongs to a single person or a group of people, such states need mass political support. The latter signals that attempts at changing the status quo have little chances of success, lowers the probability of violent revolutions, and forms democratic legitimacy, while at ...

Shoring up power: Electoral reform and the consolidation of authoritarian rule
Gandhi J., Heller A., Ora John Reuter, Electoral Studies 2022 Vol. 78 Article 102475
Why do autocrats adopt proportional representation (PR)? Conventional wisdom suggests autocrats should prefer majoritarian electoral rules because they favor large parties. Yet, since 1945, autocrats have been almost three times more likely to institute reforms towards PR than majoritarianism. Existing literature suggests incumbents institute PR to divide the opposition. We explore another motivation: executives switch ...

Do Authoritarian Elections Help the Poor? Evidence from Russian Cities
Beazer Q., Ora John Reuter, Journal of Politics 2022 Vol. 84 No. 1 P. 437–454
Do local elections under autocracy help the poor? We argue that local appointees in electoral authoritarian regimes have political incentives that undermine public service provision; regime leaders’ preoccupation with national electoral control encourages them to overlook local governance problems if subnational officials can still deliver requisite votes in national elections. Using geographic and temporal variation ...

Discrete scaling and criticality in a chain of adaptive excitable integrators
Martinez-Saito M., Chaos, Solitons and Fractals 2022 Vol. 163 No. 2022 Article 112574
We describe a chain of unidirectionally coupled adaptive excitable elements slowly driven by a stochastic process from one end and open at the other end, as a minimal toy model of unresolved irreducible uncertainty in a system performing inference through a hierarchical model. Threshold potentials adapt slowly to ensure sensitivity without being wasteful. Activity and energy are ...

The term “Empire” as applied today to so different states in known history makes it diffi cult even to give the defi nition of empire. Historical knowledge begins with critics of the sources, reconstruction of events and ascertainment of facts. The construction of theory is possible only after the phenomenological description, whereas the thoughtless use of modern models ...

Vote Mobilization, Economic Performance and Gubernatorial Appointments in Russia
Reuter O. J., Turovsky R. F., Russian Politics 2022 Vol. 7 No. 2 P. 183–209
This paper explores the impact of vote mobilization and economic performance on gubernatorial appointments in Russia. Previous research has demonstrated that governors are more likely to be reappointed when the regime is performing well at the polls in the region. By contrast, there is inconsistent evidence that regional economic performance affects a governor’s reappointment chances. ...
