'Cultural Studies Seeks to Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface of Everyday Things'
Maxim Zhiganov has been exploring different aspects of sound for many years—first in relation to his native Perm and then on a broader, global scale. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he talks about sound maps, the special issue of the journal Logos, and why it is important to make the familiar less clear and obvious.

At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

ISSUES OF LONG-HOP AND SHORT-HOP ROUTING IN WIRELESS AUDIO SENSOR NETWORKS

P. 499–502.
Karpov Ivan Victorovich
This paper considers the problem of communication range selection of nodes for transmitting audio data with a predetermined Quality of Services (QoS) in Wireless Audio Sensor Networks (WASN). The various strategy of routing selection is viewed from the perspective of network lifetime and energy efficiency. We consider routing strategies with minimum and maximum communication ranges and propose a hybrid routing for audio data transmission.

Unsourced Random Access With the MIMO Receiver: Projection Decoding Analysis
Kirill Andreev, Ustinova D., Alexey Frolov, IEEE Wireless Communications Letters 2024 Vol. 13 No. 1 P. 69–73
We consider unsourced random access with MIMO receiver – a crucial communication scenario for future 5G/6G wireless networks. We perform a projection-based decoder analysis and derive energy efficiency achievability bounds when channel state information is unknown at transmitters and the receiver (no-CSI scenario). A comparison to the maximum-likelihood (ML) achievability bounds by Gao et al. ...

Do mineral imports increase in response to decarbonization indicators other than renewable energy?
Fikru M., Kilinc-Ata N., Journal of Cleaner Production 2024 Vol. 435 Article 140468
While previous studies examine the impact of renewable energy generation capacity on mineral imports where minerals are broadly defined, this study examines the role of three decarbonization indicators (energy efficiency, energy's carbon footprint, and renewable generation) in driving import demand for four specific minerals used in multiple decarbonization technologies: copper, aluminum, nickel, and manganese. Our results, based on the cross-sectional ...

We investigate the fundamental limits of the unsourced random access over the binary-input Gaussian channel. By fundamental limits, we mean the minimal energy per bit required to achieve the target per-user probability of error. The original method proposed by Y. Polyanskiy (2017) and based on Gallager’s trick does not work well for binary signaling. We ...
