‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

Investigation of Electrodynamic Characteristics of the G- and W-Bands Folded Waveguide Slow-Wave Structure

P. 1–6.
Presnyakov S., Kasatkin A., Kravchenko N.

This study investigates the electrodynamic characteristics of "folded waveguide"-type slow-wave structures (SWSs) within the G-band (75-110 GHz) and W-band (110-300 GHz) frequency ranges. These SWSs are favored for high-frequency applications due to their advantages: higher gain, broader operating bandwidth, compact size, versatility, and simpler fabrication compared to structures like coupled cavities. Using HFSS software for 3D modeling and MATLAB for post-processing, we analyzed key electrodynamic properties, including dispersion characteristics and characteristic impedance. Additionally, we examined the influence of the electron beam transit channel on these parameters. The analysis highlights the crucial importance of carefully considering the transit channel size and accurately incorporating it into SWS simulations.

Presnyakov S., Kasatkin A., Kravchenko N., , in: 2024 IEEE 9th All-Russian Microwave Conference (RMC).: IEEE, 2024. P. 1–5.
In this paper, axially-symmetric coupled-cavity slow-wave structures (CCSWS) in the millimeter range are investigated. Using the algorithm which allows to take into account the presence of the transit channel in the SWS, the electrodynamic characteristics for cases with and without the channel present in the model are calculated. The influence of the transit channel dimensions ...

A Three Autocollimation Method for Measuring the Refractive Index of Optical Glass
Yurin A., International Journal of Applied Glass Science 2026 Vol. 17 No. 2 Article e70022
This article presents a three autocollimation method (TAM) for measuring the refractive index (RI) of optical glass. The popular minimum deviation method (MDM) for RI measurement is accurate, but it is very laborious, since the procedure of determining the minimum possible angle requires many iterations. TAM allows the calculation of RI based on the measurement ...

Investigation of Transit Channel Influence on Rectangular Chain of Coupled Cavities Slow-Wave Structure
S. A. Presnyakov, A. D. Kasatkin, N. P. Kravchenko, , in: 2024 Systems of signals generating and processing in the field of on board communications.: IEEE, 2024. P. 1–6.
In this paper, the slow-wave structures (SWSs) of the “chain of coupled cavities”-type (CCC) were investigated. This type of SWS is widely used for designing the microwave amplifying devices due to their excellent heat dissipation properties allowing for higher output power. The influence of the transit channel, where the electron beam propagates, on the electrodynamic ...

Yurin A., Вишняков Г. Н., Minaev V., Компьютерная оптика 2024 Т. 48 № 2 С. 225–230
Dispersion characteristics of optical glass are considered. An approach to research of dispersion characteristics of optical glass is proposed, requiring the measurement of the refractive index at only three wavelengths, which simplifies the measurement process compared with the use of the widely used Sellmeier equation. An approximation function for the refractive index of optical glass ...

In this paper, the slow-wave structure (SWS) of the “folded waveguide” -type was considered. This SWS is widely used for designing the devices in higher frequencies like millimeter and sub millimeter ranges due to its compactness, increased interaction length, reduced transit time effects, lower voltage requirements, and wide bandwidth. The calculation of its electrodynamic characteristics, ...

This paper discusses the modeling of the process of interaction in traveling-wave tubes (TWTs) based on 'coaxial-radial line'-type (CRL-type) slow-wave structures (SWSs). One of the most important tasks while designing TWTs is to achieve high output power over wide range of frequencies. The aim of this paper is to try to solve this problem by ...
