‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Implicit auditory perception of local and global irregularities in passive listening condition
Liaukovich K., Ukraintseva Y., Martynova O., Neuropsychologia 2022 Vol. 165 Article 108129
The auditory system detects differences in sounds at an implicit level, but data on this difference might not be sufficient to make explicit discrimination. The biomarkers of implicit auditory memory of ambiguous stimuli could shed light on unconscious auditory processing and implicit auditory learning. Mismatch negativity (MMN) and P3a, components of event-related potentials (ERPs) reflecting stimuli discrimination without direct ...

Связывание признаков в зрительной модальности зависит от внимания: анализ негативности рассогласования
Сайфулина К. Э., Lazarev I. E., Chernysheva E. G. et al., Журнал высшей нервной деятельности им. И.П. Павлова 2019 Т. 69 № 1 С. 37–50
The current study aimed to find out whether attention is required for visual feature binding. Participants performed a visual discrimination task with Gabor grates, which differed in two features: spatial frequency and angle. Detection of deviant stimuli against standards was possible exclusively by feature conjunctions rather than by separate features. We analyzed event-related potentials under ...

Feature binding under holistic object perception: the interplay of bottom-up and top-down brain mechanisms
Chernysheva E. G., Lazarev I. E., Saifulina K.E. et al., , in: International Congress "Neuroscience for Medicine and Psychology", Sudak, Crimea, Russia, May 30-June 10, 2017.: [б.и.], 2017. P. 446–446.
Feature binding is believed to be critical for perception, while brain mechanisms of this process are still under debate. Studies measuring mismatch negativity (MMN) demonstrate that binding occurs at a low level of the cortical hierarchy, while behavioral experiments suggest a much higher integrative level. The current study aimed at testing the hypothesis that processing of feature conjunctions ...

Chernyshev B. V., Medvedev V., / Series WP BRP "PSYCHOLOGY". 2016. No. WP BRP 70/PSY/2016.
In tasks involving response choice based on certain stimulus-to-response mappings, at least two stages of information processing may be involved: (1) formation of sensory stimulus object representations leading to stimulus identification, and (2) application of stimulus-to-response mappings (i.e. “task rules”) to these representations leading to response selection. Most of the research done in this area ...

Distributed feature binding in the auditory modality: experimental evidence toward reconciliation of opposing views on the basis of mismatch negativity and behavioral measures
Boris V. Chernyshev, Bryzgalov D. V., Lazarev I. E. et al., NeuroReport 2016 Vol. 27 No. 11 P. 837–842
Current understanding of feature binding remains controversial. Studies involving mismatch negativity (MMN) measurement show a low level of binding, whereas behavioral experiments suggest a higher level. We examined the possibility that the two levels of feature binding coexist and may be shown within one experiment. The electroencephalogram was recorded while participants were engaged in an ...
