When Pictures Hinder Understanding: Illustrations May Impede Learning of Abstract Ideas
Illustrations can help remember specific actions but do not always make abstract ideas easier to learn. Researchers from HSE University and Humboldt University compared how people learn from texts with different levels of abstractness. They found that participants remembered illustrations better and performed better on related tasks after reading a multimedia text about yoga asanas than after reading an abstract text about the Nash equilibrium. The findings could help improve the selection of illustrations for educational and informational materials. The study has been published in Learning and Instruction.

'I Wish That People Would Place Greater Trust in Science'
When Tatiana Eremicheva chose Fundamental and Computational Linguistics as her field of study, she thought it would be about learning languages. Instead, she discovered it was about helping people. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses science as a way of understanding the world, billiards as a team-building activity, and why learning to read is not always as easy as it seems.

Immunity to Chaos: How Personal Resources Help Us Cope with the Challenges of a Turbulent World
International conflicts, crises and digital overload—the modern world puts our minds to the test every day. Traditional psychology often focuses on the consequences: anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic disorders. But what if we looked at the problem differently—through the lens of the resources that prevent us from breaking down? Psychological immunity is precisely this set of resources. Alena Zolotareva and her group, Psychological Immunity as a Resource for Positive Functioning, are developing an integrative model of this phenomenon, adapting diagnostic tools and preparing for large-scale empirical research. Why do psychologists need to collaborate with medical professionals, and how could their research transform preventive care in clinics and corporations?

Kuzyutin D., Smirnova N., Veselkov A., Bulletin of the South Ural State University, Series: Mathematical Modelling, Programming and Computer Software 2026 Vol. 19 No. 3 P. 40–49
We consider spatial dynamic fishery management problem taking into account the resource migration process between an open-access fishing area and no-take marine protected area. The introduced extension of a standard single-criterion fish war game implies that each player aims to maximize simultaneously two performance criteria which present an economic benefit and an environmental conservation goal ...

Kuzyutin D., Smirnova N., Тантлевский И. Р., Математическая теория игр и ее приложения 2024 Т. 16 № 1 С. 61–77
The paper examines an infinite-horizon multistage game of renewable resource extraction with two types of players, differing in the discount rates of future payoffs. Using the dynamic programming method, a non-cooperative solution - a subgame perfect Nash equilibrium in stationary positional strategies, as well as a cooperative (Paretooptimal) solution for the case of complete cooperation ...

Sustainable Cooperation in a Bicriteria Game of Renewable Resource Extraction
Kuzyutin D., Smirnova N., Mathematics 2023 Vol. 11 No. 6 Article 1497
We study a multi-objective finite-horizon game model of renewable, common resource extraction where the players have two separate objectives (one is economic success; the other describes the players’ environmental concern). We derive the cooperative strategy and the subgame-perfect Pareto equilibrium in linear-state non-stationary feedback strategies by employing the dynamic programming approach. Since the utility is ...

A dynamic multicriteria game of renewable resource extraction with environmentally concerned players
Kuzyutin D., Smirnova N., Economics Letters 2023 Vol. 226 Article 111078
We introduce a multi-objective discrete-time competitive model of renewable resource extraction in which the standard economic objective is supplemented with an environmental one. Non-cooperative and cooperative solutions in feedback strategies are derived and compared with the solutions established for a standard single-criterion dynamic game. ...

A Novel Payoff Distribution Procedure for Sustainable Cooperation in an Extensive Game with Payoffs at All Nodes

This paper is a contribution to the problem of sustainable cooperation in an extensive-form game. We study an extension of the subgame-perfect core concept to more broad class of games (when the payoffs are defined at all nodes) which is based on the payoff distribution procedure approach. The properties of this β-S-P Core are studied ...

Cooperation Enforcing in Multistage Multicriteria Game: New Algorithm and Its Implementation

To enforce the long-term cooperation in a multistage multicriteria game we use the imputation distribution procedure (IDP) based approach. We mainly focus on such useful properties of the IDP like “reward immediately after the move” assumption, time consistency inequality, efficiency and non-negativity constraint. To overcome the problem of negative payments along the optimal cooperative trajectory ...

A-Subgame Concept and the Solutions Properties for Multistage Games with Vector Payoffs
Kuzyutin D., Yaroslavna Pankratova, Светлов Р., , in: Frontiers of Dynamic Games, Game Theory and Management, St. Petersburg, 2018.: Birkhäuser, 2019. P. 85–102.
We deal with multistage multicriteria games in extensive form and employ so-called “A-subgame” concept to examine dynamical properties of some non-cooperative and cooperative solutions. It is proved that if we take into account only the active players at each A-subgame the set of all strong Pareto equilibria is time consistent but does not satisfy dynamical ...

Time consistent cooperative solutions for multistage games with vector payoffs
Kuzyutin D., Nikitina M., Operations Research Letters 2017 Vol. 45 No. 3 P. 269–274
To ensure sustainable cooperation in multistage games with vector payoffs we use the payment schedule based approach. The main dynamic properties of cooperative solutions used in single-criterion multistage games are extended to multicriteria games. We design two recurrent payment schedules that satisfy such advantageous properties as the efficiency and the time consistency conditions, non-negativity and irrational ...

Comparison theorem for a class of Riccati differential equations and its application
Palamarchuk E. S., Differential Equations 2016 Vol. 52 No. 8 P. 981–986
We prove a comparison theorem for the solutions of Riccati matrix equations in which the diagonal entries of the matrix multiplying the linear term are perturbed by a bounded function. This theorem is used to study optimal trajectories in a pollution control problem stated in the form of a linear regulator over an infinite time ...
