The present volume contains 17 articles based on papers selected from the list of more than 50 presentations presented at the Second Workshop on Language, Music, and Computing. The papers went through a thorough double-blind peer-review process. The volume is divided into five blocks, each of which covers a distinct subtopic: the universal grammar of music, the parallelism between music and singing, language as music, technical aspects of computational study of both language and music, and formalizing the informal. The following is a brief overview of the contributions and their impact on the field.
Alchemical themes in one form or another have penetrated into various aspects of modern life. In our paper we will focus on modern music, taking for example the work of the famous Russian group "Orgy of righteous" and its leader Sergey Kalugin. Kalugin himself was personally acquainted with Evgeny Golovin and has undergone considerable influence of Golovin’s circle and creatively transformed these influences. The stages of his poetic and musical activities Kalugin divides in alchemical manner: first initial stage – Nigredo; second, lasting until now – Albedo. Alchemical motifs are richly represented in many songs of the group both indirectly (for example, "Path of the Crow"), and directly (for example, "Royal wedding", which is a musical variation of "Chemical wedding..." by J. Andrea). The paper suggests an analysis of the lyrics and the ideological background of the songs
The links between culture and communication are undeniable, complex, and ever-evolving. An emphasis of cultural discourse studies has been on bringing together the differing ways to study communication and culture, with a particular focus on how local and global cultures interact in the process of globalization (Shi-Xu 2016). It is the globalization of music, particularly rap and hip-hop, that Flew, Ryan, and Su (2019) analyzed in the Chinese context. Drawing on KraidyLs (2005) hybridity theory, Flew, Ryan, and Su (2019) addressed how rap and hip-hop have developed into a hybrid musical and cultural genre in China, using the Chinese television programme The Rap of China as a case study.
This paper focuses on problems of fixing and research of folk music. The study of traditional music is not possible using only musical recordings made with European notation system as tuning of traditional music can be different from that of modern European music. In the case of Viet and Muong folk music, for example, records in European notation can not represent microalteration. In addition, vocal techniques and timbre characteristics also are important objects of research, but research of this kind is impossible when using only hearing. Modern methods of analysis of the audio material can determine with high accuracy audio frequency, as well as can help in analysis of the rhythm and timbre characteristics
