This article provides an overview of the responses of British writers of the first half of the 20th century about Russia, the Russians and Russian literature. The opinions of the literary community are presented in chronological order, connected with the changes that have taken place in the country and in the world, they are illustrated by the statements from works, letters and articles. It is shown that the views of British writers on the image of Russia are often contradictory, based on established stereotypes, ethnocentrism or caused by the writer's personal outlook.
The article analyses the up-to-date principles of materials design in English language teaching. It is described how each principle comes to work in a new course for university researchers and PhD students. The conclusion is drawn that current methodological approaches have to be taken into account in order to create a course book able to meet the requirements of the new educational paradigm.
The volume presents papers delivered o the topic of Urban Dimensions of American Civilization.It reflects major themes and methodological approaches-interdisciplinary, comparative, imagological-applied to the national and transnational views of the ethnicity, race and gender identity, and to the multicultural society of the USA as projected in its literary, polemical, art, historical, social and political essays.
In this paper it is outlined a hypothesis about particular conceptual place of «literature» within the philosophical hermeneutics of H.-G. Gadamer. It is possible to talk about the accentuation of literature as a basic category in the context of ambiguous but also multifunctional meaning development of the concept of literature. The purpose of the paper is to show how the relative to this elaboration thematic lines are corresponded with the main principles of philosophical hermeneutics.
The article looks into how the SWOT analysis can be used for educational purposes - namely for Academic writing course and course materials design. The introduction into the teaching process a specifically designed for the course textbook which has been tailored to the needs of a particular group of teachers and students can raise the level of attractiveness of a difficult course and facilitate the attainment of the course goal saving time and effort both for teachers and students.
The article is devoted to the analysis of the image of Ship of Fools in the French literature of the Renaissance epoch by the example of the forth and the fifth books of the novel by François Rabelais Gargantua and Pantagruel: its functions in the novel by F. Rabelais and its symbolic meanings.
The paper analyzes, using a survey of 700 high school students, their attitudes towards classical and modern literature. School continues to shape views of Russian classical literature as a supervalue. Yet, reading practices diverge from the values. Most students do not read contemporary Russian authors viewing them as subpar to the classics. Foreign literature, on the contrary, is popular among teenagers because it is not subjected to comparisons with the classics.
The present article continues the investigation of the Soqotri verbal system undertaken by the Russian-Soqotri fieldwork team. The article focuses on the so-called “weak” and “geminated” roots in the basic stem. The investigation is based on the analysis of full paradigms (perfect, imperfect and jussive) of more than 170 “weak” and “geminated” Soqotri verbs.
