This article deals with the changes in the social and political position of the military class of Medieval Japan, its influence on the ideals and values of samurai culture. The author pays particular attention to the process of establishing provincial warrior administrations during the Muromachi age, the transformation of shugo and jito functions that determined the changes in samurai social traditions in the 15th and16th centuries, and to the specific social identities of warrior houses compared with other groups of Japanese society.
During the XVIth century Japan acquires Western geographical knowledge for the first time. The adaptation went on comparatively fast, and thinkers of the Edo period (1603 - 1867) started to offer their own view of the world. Unevitably different systems of knowledge were mixed, and also Japan was compared to China, India and Europe. As a result the idea of Japan's supremacy was supported in a new way. Nishikawa offered one of the most original explanations, which is compared to of the other thinkers'.

This article investigates the meaning of the title and sur-heading of Hokusai Manga (subsequently in this text – HM) and provides a detailed analysis of the term manga which is difficult to understand and translate. In doing so, it puts HM into the context of the early modern Japanese picture-books and offers an attempt to classify its genre.

"Hokusai manga" occupies a special place in the artistic heritage of Katsushika Hokusai. In its 15 volumes with ca. four thousand of figures and subjects, Hokusai created an encyclopedia of old Japan in pictures. This articles investigates the beginnings of the manga genre and pays a special attention for the interpretation of the enigmatic words "denshin kaishu" in its title. A problem of collaboration of Hokusai with other artists is discussed as well as the forms of his personal output.
Historiography of works on hitory of Japan.
The present article continues the investigation of the Soqotri verbal system undertaken by the Russian-Soqotri fieldwork team. The article focuses on the so-called “weak” and “geminated” roots in the basic stem. The investigation is based on the analysis of full paradigms (perfect, imperfect and jussive) of more than 170 “weak” and “geminated” Soqotri verbs.
