The article highlights the issue of effective academic presentations which university under- and post graduates are engaged with through the prism of pragmatics. Starting by a brief outline of cultural differences between the Russian and Anglo-American traditions it then illuminates common mistakes focusing on those that hamper understanding and considers benefits of implementing a new approach to train good presenters.
The article is devoted to the problem of the students’ reflexive skills development in the framework of the project - based learning. The author considers the implementation of the adapted method «Six thinking hats» by E. de Bono as the tool that supports teaching-learning reflexive strategies in academic speaking in a foreign language.
The article aims at finding appropriate measurement instruments for the assessment of communication mobility (CM) development as an important component of professional intercultural communicative competence. The comparative analysis of the BEC speaking exam paper and communication mobility strategies and tactics shows that the exam format covers components of CM model to a large extent and consequently may be used to measure the level of communication mobility development in the absence of a specifically designed instrument. Moreover, the analysis suggests teaching implications that entail addressing the issues of non-linguistic strategies and tactics both explicitly at the exam preparation stage as well as in ESP teaching in general.
